IMO both kick butt! If it were me, I would have to go standard, they are KILLER!

Sorry to clog up the board, but this is a slightly different topic than the thread I just created about the value of 2011 American Standard teles in light of 2012 changes.

Now that the 2012 American Standard Tele has a countoured body and custom shop pickups, is the American DELUXE Tele really worth $500 or so more? What's better--custom shop pickups on the 2012 American Standard or N-1 noiseless on the Deluxe?

I gather (but could be wrong) that the Deluxe model has not had any major overhauls for 2012, unlike the Standard.

Thanks.

What's better--a 2012 American Standard Tele for $999 or a 2011 or 2012 American Deluxe for $1400?

Did Fender just make the Standard as good as the Deluxe except for the compound radius?

It has a few additional things that raise the price - the compound radius board being the main one. Then you add the N3 pickups, S1 switching, locking tuners and body binding (at least on the alder body models). Is it worth $500 more? Well, that's up to personal preference. Really you could add the locking tuners to the American Standard for about $60 or so. The alder body ones also have a contoured neck heel.

On the other hand, the new American Standards have the back contour on the ash bodies as well as the alder bodies. On the American Deluxe Ash you don't get any contours at all.

American Deluxes have white and black pearloid dots on their fretboards, not the abalone position markers they used to, it's really annoying!

Fender should bring back the abalone dots for the Deluxes and reinstate the 22-fret necks for the basses...

I absolutely agree with you - they should have never changed from those abalone dots. It really set the Am Dlxs apart from the standard models. Hey, I've a Fender Select Tele and it has those same black pearloid dots as the Am Dlx model, so they didn't even hold off the abalone for them.

I always thought one of Fender's best color combos was that trans teal they had on the first version of the American Deluxe - that really picked up the color of the abalone dots and almost made them glow under most lighting conditions.

+1
Was a time you could tell it was a Deluxe in a tenth of a second just from the dots. For a company steeped in tradition it seems odd to me they wouldn't keep that one.

Some post-2004/pre-2010 Deluxes were finished in transparent teal. These guitars were Factory Special Runs made for certain dealers such as Guitar Centre and Sweetwater.

Those post 2003 ones are pretty rare; I don't think I've seen one come up for sale used.

Regarding the first run American Deluxes (the 1998-2003s) - I guess the guy who placed orders at one of the local Fender dealers in the city I was in at the time really dug the trans teal because they always had at least one Strat and one Tele in stock in that color at all times. I thought the Teles in particular looked really nice in the trans teal with the maple fingerboard.

The CS did a couple of Showmasters with that transparent teal finish.

These Custom Shop beauties looked classy with their abalone dot-inlaid figured maple necks (shown here with a rosewood fretboard).

To this day I kick myself for not having snapped up a used AD (Nashville) Tele (Maple) in transparent teal back about 7 or 8 years ago.

Yep - there was just something really cool about those in that color; it even made the plastic parts look a little greener - like a vintage early 60s Strat or Tele. For some reason the middle Strat pickup just looked right on the teal one but out of place on some of the other colors. Maybe it was just me.

The transparent teal finish was offered on the HWY1 series for a brief time in 2005.
