New member here - have been reading posts for a few days and learning a lot. I got my first telecaster back in 1971. Not sure of the exact vintage, but it looked the white 1967 model here: http://www.rocknrollvintage.com/informa ... uitars.htm

I bought/sold several guitars during the next couple years, eventually getting thinline in 1973 which I sold a few years later and just played acoustic. In the 1980's, I got a Fender Lead that I was never very happy with. It was stolen when my summer home was burglarized around 1990.

Over the years I played less and less as career and family made demands on my time. Then I picked up a used 2003 MIM Telecaster custom in 2006 which mostly sat in the closet.

Having recently retired, I've been rediscovering the guitar and practicing a couple hours a day for the past six months. I still have my old Gibson J-50 Deluxe from 1972, which has a nice tone but is in pretty bad shape. Got a Martin D-15M in February and it makes a huge difference to have a nice quality instrument instead of a beat-up antique to play. :)

A couple days ago I changed the strings and spent a little while tweaking the MIM telecaster custom, but kept remembering how much I liked that old thinline. For one thing, the solid body on the custom always felt too heavy for me. On an impulse I ran down to Guitar Center, traded the custom for a Classic 1972 MIM Thinline and I am loving it. :D

It seems really close to my old 72 thinline - in fact, I would say that the build quality feels better on the new MIM thinline (although it was a long time ago, so I could be wrong). This morning I was remembering some old photos my father took of me in 1974. So I dug through boxes up in the attic and was really happy to find them - especially since they show my original 72 thinline!

The telecaster looks exactly the same to me, except the old one had a black pickguard. Not sure, but I think I like the light color better on the new one. Of course, I now wish I'd never sold my original 72 telecaster, but the new one gives me the feeling of being reunited with an old friend. :)

Thanks everyone. :)

Here's what the J-50 looks like today (sorry, bad iPhone picture). I really didn't take care of it very well, left it sitting around the house - my daughter liked to drop stuff in the hole when she was little. Never got a proper case, I still have the cheap chip-board case I got with it, the fake "leather" is all peeling off. I thought about selling it, but I'm sure I would later regret that for sentimental reasons.

I don't think it would be worth the cost or effort to restore at the moment. It was never all that great of a guitar and I'm really happy with the Martin now. But it comes in handy when my daughter's family visits, so I can do acoustic jams with my son in law. He likes it better than his Washburn.

Funny thing - the front was originally a very light natural color. I went for years without taking it out of its case, and when I did I was amazed to see how dark the finish had turned. I actually think it looks better now.

Looking closely at the old picture now, I see one slight difference. The new guitar says "THINLINE" and the old one didn't. Looks like it might say something under "Fender" on the old one, but it's lost in the grain of the old photo. Possibly just a mark though.
