My Squier Esquire:

DiMarzio Area "T" pickup, GFS locking tuners, string-through bridge conversion (guitar was a Squier Affinity Tele), CTS pots, CRL 3-way switch, Eldred-mod wiring.

The Area "T" is definitely not muddy. In fact, it will rip your head off, expecially when the tone pot is switched out.
