I am planning on putting a set of 10's on my tele. It currently has 9's on it. Will it need to have the truss rod adjusted and reset up?? or should it be fine to switch them without any adjustments. Never done any sort of truss adjusting and wouldnt trust myself to do it...

It's likely that you will because of higher tension strings. Otherwise, you'll be out of tune at certain frets. You may want to adjust the action, too. You should pay a guitar tech to do a full set up as he changes strings with a new guage. It'll cost you anywhere from $40 to $60 depending on your guitar, plus the strings.

My daughter bought me a '52 MIJ reissue Tele for my birthday last year. Before the guitar left the store I had them change the factory installed strings to Fender 50XL flatwound. These strings go from .011 to .050. No truss rod adjustment was necessary. I did have to set the action, but I would have done this anyway to suit me.

Put the new strings on and try it. Chances are that it will play fine.

I have found on most guitars that going from 9's to 10's doesn't make much of difference. HOWEVER I always check everything and make adjustments where they are needed.

Better safe than sorry.

If I do this....when looking down the neck for issues...what am I looking for exactly? Will it be hard to notice to an untrained eye or will it stand out?

Sorry Really BIG noob when it comes to the technical stuff. Been playing for a while but never trusted myself enough to do the maintenance on my guitar.

I always eyeball the neck from the body side, getting my eye low even to look straight down the neck. If you look down your neck now you will see how straight it, it should have just a very very slight bow in the middle. After you put the new strings on and tune to pitch take another look. If there is more of a bow to the neck it will need a slight adjustment.

I agree with putting on the strings and see what happens. Truss rod adjustment is not as difficult as it sounds. Try just quarter turns at a time, with a 24 hour wait between turns, and you shouldn't have any problems. If your guitar has never been set up, then it probably needs it anyway. The best bet is to pay a pro to set up your guitar right, but it doesn't hurt to tinker with it. There is a lot of information on the internet.

dude -- brother --- 9's to 10's --- don't even give it a second thought just put them on --- you won't need to touch the truss rod, you most likely won't even need to reset the intonation. You're last name would have to be Mozart to notice the dif!

I'm with the go-ahead-and-try it school here. I'd be amazed if you actually need a truss rod adjustment for this sort of change.

With changing string sizes, you will not see any changes in the neck for at least 1 week. Even after adjusting the truss rod, you don't see any of the effects right away (if you are doing it correctly).

You want the wood to slowly settle in, or you will risk breaking some of the fibers in the wood, ultimately weakening the neck.
