I've been offered a good price one of the Tele-Bration anniversary Mahogany teles with the Lamboo fretboard. Does anyone own one of these and what is your opinion on the durability of the Lamboo when used for a fretboard?

Welcome.

Call me, "Old", "Traditionalist" or whatever. Laminated Bamboo for a fretboard? I don't think so!

As you are one whose opinions I most respect in these forums, I'm curious as to why? Do you think that the laminations will separate over time?
Regards,
Alex

I thank you for your compliment.

Not only separate but discolor, become coarse and/or wrinkle. Consider too, if bamboo was a viable alternative, superior stringed instrument makers in areas where bamboo is plentiful would have been using it generations ago up through this typing.

Thanks for your response Martian. The discoloration/delamination/wrinkling possibility was what I was worried about. It looks gorgeous in the photos. You'd have to wonder what inspired Fender to combine mahogany with what is basically a species of grass. For the same money I could get a more conventional Tele. Decision time.

You're welcome.

Remember, anything can be made to look good in a picture (even me). Reality however, is a completely different issue.

As to what Fender was thinking, only they can answer that.

I'd strongly suggest you check the guitar out in person. I bought a Lamboo Tele-bration which was supposed to have a bamboo neck and a laminated bamboo top. Yes it has the laminated bamboo top and back but the neck and fretboard are most definitely maple.

There has been quite a bit of miss-marketing by Fender where the tele-bration series is concerned, if you trawl these discussion boards you'll find a few examples of what I'm talking about. I don't get the impression that the marketing was designed to deceive the customer, more that the production models didn't quite match up to the marketing which was all released before the guitars went into production. I'm sure there were various factors which led to the differences in the adverts and the actual guitars when they arrived.

Having said all of that I love the idea of the tele-bration series and am very happy with the Lamboo that I bought (and I'd be even happier if it had the bamboo neck that I was expecting, I waited about 9 months for this guitar after placing the order). I'd like to buy more of the tele-bration series in the future.

Photos do not do this guitar justice (or certainly not my photos at any rate).

Thanks for the reply. Suppose I should ask the dealer, who is in another city. Checking it out in person would mean a plane flight. Hopefully they can tell the difference (and tell the truth). If it is good old maple then I'm a happy camper.

Your Lamboo Tele looks very luxe. Thanks for the pic.

cheers

Question answered. The fretboard is maple like the neck. No Lamboo in sight. Seems like several major dealers sites list this model as having a Lamboo fretboard as per the original Fender press release and product info. They're all wrong apparently. Anyhow, my problem is solved. Thanks to all who provided advice. :D

SJLen that is one fine looking Tele. I like the laminate on the body and that contrasting binding and the pickguard! Classy looking.

I have traveled the world as an active duty member of the USAF and run across quite a few bamboo made guitars in the Phillipines. All were laminated and the bodies did hold up pretty good, but the necks quite frankly did not. The necks delaminated and bowed like crazy. Now mind you these were not top name manufacturers like Fender, but they did make quite a few of them. I think Fender probably realized that after some testing a great renewable source did not work out as planned. Maybe like some of the Phillipino guitars, they started out ok, but after time they delaminated and production and promotion/sales department were not quite in sinc hence the bad info out there.

FWIW
