I "need" to get a Telecaster and have tried a few new ones. Was really close to shelling out for a new American Standard Tele, but have now been offered a '78 for the same price. Everything is totally original on the '78 (pots, tuners, pickups etc, but the body was sanded down and a professional clear refinish done a few years ago.
I know the refinish devalues the '78, but it plays and sounds great.
I'd be keen to know what you expert Tele guys think - New or 34 years old with a re-finish?
Both have Rosewood fretboards, which is my preference.

Not even close for me. I'd take the '78.

OK, you're confirming my gut feel (and preference). i just wondered if the re-finish might take the shine off.
Thanks..

The 78 IF it is lightweight and not a heavy plank like most were from that era. Old wood is tough to beat when it comes to tone and resonance, IMO. I recently got my dream birthyear guitar, a ash bodied vintage white all original 78, it is only 6lb9oz and the lightest 70's Tele I had ever seen. It is well broken in and yellowed and the pups actually sound great for 70's pups. I usually keep my guitars at 8lbs or less whenever possible so this one is just perfect and the neck is great. My main concern with the neck was the vintage radius and I like fat necks but this one is perfect and once I get it refretted with some jumbos i'll be in business.
