Okay, so I got here a Standard Telecaster. I have been playing it for months ever since I got it in December of last year.
I have always been playing a Dean Vendetta and quite a few Ibanez's, and I have always been used to a humbucker-installed guitar, until I went out of my way and got a Telecaster. It's your typical Tele - 2 single-coil pickups. I'm finding out it can't quite satisfy my preferences for sound as it did not have any humbucker in it.

So here are my options:

1. Get a single-coil-sized hum-cancelling pickup for the bridge position (probably a DiMarzio Tone Zone T, or a Seymour Duncan Hot Rails for Tele);

2. Or I could change the neck pickup to a high (or moderate) output humbucker, since I have seen firsthand that a standard-size humbucker could be fitted in that cavity.

What do you guys think?

Hey mate, I went through the exact same thing with my american standard strat. It just didn't sound "Beefy" enough. I suggest, if you can, take your amp down to GC or what ever your closest music store is and play around with the new american standard with the twisted tele in the neck and the broadcaster (before they were using the standard single coil).

A decent set of single coils is what you're after, it'll give you that beef that will compete with the humbuckers but still have that single coil bell like tones.

I just traded into a Squier BSB Affinity Telecaster and definitely feel the need for a pup upgrade. One option I have looked and will probably go with is a set of DiMarzio Area T pickups. For the bridge I am planning on an Area T 615 and for the neck a regular Area T neck. The Area T 615 is billed as allowing you to twang yet still having enough beef to satisfy the modern country player's need to go from twang to beefy rock tone in the same song. In my Strat, I have two Area 67'S that do not disappoint, especially with a full size DMZ PAF Pro in the bridge.

Hope this helps!

I'm back with good news! I went with the neck pickup replacement option. I got a sweet deal with this guy who's selling a DiMarzio Air Norton humbucker (not the Air Norton S).
I'm buying it this weekend and having it installed a week from now, probably.
Any opinions on my decision?

Thanks for your responses!

You can't go wrong with DiMarzio!

Maybe take a look at the DiMarzio Pre B-1 for Tele bridge.

I know just what you mean here. I've almost fallen in love with the American Standard Telecaster, this one in fact:

The Alnico V magnet in the bridge is right up there with a moderate-output humbucker and can actually push my JVM amp. I want one of these so bad I can taste it every time I go into my local store. Problem is, I don't have $1,000 at the moment.
