I have the Blacktop Baritone Tele with the original strings. I find the strings a little thin to play (the sound is great however.) I would like to change strings to something thicker and perhaps more tension (I also play with my fingers and play bass guitar as well as archtop.)
The string manufacturers do not specify scale length of the guitar (does this matter?) I am not sure what choices I have (I don't even know what strings it comes with.)

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

What I'd say is what strings do you usually like to use and like the feel of? Fender seem to be putting a lot of guitars out with 9s on them at the moment (maybe they've always done this, someone else will know better than me). Do you have another guitar? If so what gague stings are on it and do those strings feel heavier or lighter than the strings on the blacktop?

I guess it's a process of elimination until you find what you like, at the end of the day what's important is what feels good to you because it's you who's playing the guitar.

The worst that can happen is that you buy a set of strings that are the same gague as the ones that are already on the blacktop.

Thanks Steve.
I think the 'problem' is knowing what the 27inch scale length means in terms of buying strings. From the specs here at the Fender site, the string gauge is 13 to 65 is what it comes with now.
My archtop is a normal length and I use 12 to 52 so I am wanting near this feel and tension but the strings relating to the 27 inch.
I think I found some 15s on internet, but there was nothing about what scale length your baritone is. Maybe you just have to try them like you say, but I am hoping someone has gone through this already.

Hi

There's not a lot of string sets available on the market for baritones.

The best one is the D'addario EXL158 with the same global tension than the one I got on my blacktop Tele Baritone, except that it is much more balanced (same tension on each strings). By the way, I had to say that the plain 020 is a complete aberration on the original set, way too light!!!!

If you need something heavier, you'll maybe like the Ernie Ball "Slinky Baritone 2839" set.

Have a look at this : http://vinic.free.fr/strings/?l=0
I did that few years ago as I was looking for a perfect string set for my first baritone with a special tuning... I never found that perfect string set. In the end, I ordered D'addario strings separately! more expensive but great result!
If you prefer to order a full set, see the very last link on the page.
