i think goin with the american vintage will give you a better resale value, but i think you could just buy some nice pickups in the mim and it will play just as well

I have a 60's Classic and I changed the pickups to Texas Specials...and while your at it change the trem block. The ones that come in them are not beefy enough...once you do that, they are GREAT guitars and it plays as nice as my 82 AVRI 57 Strat and the tone is good too...although a little different from the AVRI...but that may have more to do with the rosewood fretboard and the finish (poly vs nitro).

Edit...sorry forgot I was on the Tele forum...mine was a strat, but I do think the same applies for the pickups....
