tone is tamer, juicier fatter. but also airier and open. probably some of that is the special select pickups but also the chambered ash body has that effect on this select model (think thinline without f-hole, less punchy than regular teles). the other 2 selects have unchambered empress. This is the best sounding chambered tele I have ever heard and will go great with the jazz rhythm chords I play a lot. Only complaint with the guitar is cosmetic. On the selects I have seen (mostly photos), the two halves of the tops are not well book matched.

I like that you added "airier and open" to the description of the tone. That with "juicer fatter" does a great job of summing it up.

I also noticed that in many of the online dealer photos, the two halves of the tops are not as well book matched as they could be. I think this is where a builder like Suhr has done a better job overall. The Select I chose did have a very well matched top, extraordinary in fact. Other than that, I put these right up there with Suhr. I have a Suhr S3 and it is a guitar that get a lot of use.

I got to do a live jam with the Select last night. The others guys were very impressed with the sounds that came out of it. This guitar is really growing on me!

Airy is a good way to describe it - the other day I got the amp adjusted so I was getting a nice jangle-pop sound out of mine (not quite a Ric but close enough) then got it back into more Tele territory with an overdrive pedal - very flexible.

I put some other photos up in an "NGD" thread a couple of weeks ago; I find the stain on these makes it kind of hard to get a good shot - this one has too much flash but here it is anyway:

Tele Selecters,

Really glad to hear that all tele select buyers weighing in are so happy with their guitars! (maybe we might hear about an unhappy customer?) I am interested in what amp/spkrs you all are playing thru, what type of music, and something about the tone you are shooting for (already have seen some of this in descriptions above).

Book matching tops: Comparing all the for sale online photos for the Selects I have seen to the photos we see above, I would classify the above matches as somewhat above avg to really good. The Select I have id'd locally is nothing special matching top wise, but the neck figuring is incredible (we all make trade-offs).

Tele Select tone: I am convinced that the open, airy tone in these guitars is mainly the chambering (although the wood type and quality chosen and lamination technique probably also contribute). Check out page 146 of the Aug 2012 Guitar Player magazine which briefly compares hollow (my example is Gibson ES-175) to thinline hollows (Gibson ES-125TC) to semi-acoustic (Gibson ES-335) to chambered (Fender Tele Thinline, AVTS all ash). As correctly defined in this article a Fender TT is not a thinline hollow but a chambered style. In the search (3 years now) for what I wanted for a jazz rhythm sound, I have owned one of each style above (model owned in parentheses). I hope that the Fender Tele Select is the end of that search.

Looks like a great guitar. I have the oppertunity to buy one, but I noticed the serial started with US11, and I thought the productions started in 2012? Anybody else with an Telecaster select from 2011?

Fender probably started the first runs of these at the end of 2011 so they would be available for sale in January 2012. They do this all the time - the first American Specials had "Z9" (2009) numbers even though they weren't introduced until 2010; the revised American Deluxes also came out in early 2010 and the first ones had 2009 serial numbers. I've owned a 2004 American Deluxe Strat V-neck model with a 2003 serial number - again a guitar that wasn't introduced until 2004 but was made so they could ship out in January.

I have seen a few online with "US11" numbers - particularly ones from first run of 100 of each model that were also hand numbered (i.e. they had something like "25/100" written in ink on the back of the headstock). I would still consider them to be a 2012 model since they weren't publically available until January.

I haven't checked with Fender to see when my Select Tele shipped out, but the dealer had only had it in stock for a couple of weeks when I got it last month; it has a "US12" serial number. I should also note that the case for mine does not have the "Fender Select" medallion on the accessory compartment lid like the earlier ones had. It is identical to the ones with the medallion (tweed, dark brown ends, and red poodle plush lining) but no medallion. I have seen other ones that have arrived at dealers over the last two months shown with cases without the medallion.

A few weeks ago I stopped in at Music House in Seiverville TN. They had a Tele Select Viola with the chrome hardware. I have been looking for a new Tele since I sold my Nashville B-bender earlier this year. If you've ever been in this store you know they have a very large selection and their prices are very good. Their only drawback is the 9.5% sales tax which you can get around if you get them to ship it out of state, but that sounds like it's ending soon for everyone. I was immediately drawn to it's looks. The birdseye maple looks great and I thought the viola finish gave it an old look which I like. I plugged it into a Deluxe Reverb and was blown away with the sound and playability. The cutout for my belly works great  Since I wasn't familar with the guitar I passed on it and started my research. I liked everything I read on it. I sent out a few requests for prices then dealt with my local music store (Willis). They had one in stock at another store, got it in for me and made me a offer just a little higher than the internet, but that was because of taxes. Otherwise they were lower ($2995list, $2149map, bought for $1745+tax). I have an condition that causes me to buy a lot of guitars and I usually try to get them locally. I wasn't too happy with the B-bender I had. The pups did not give me the sound I wanted, I'm not good enough of a player to utilize the bender to make it worthwhile and I was constantly tuning the G string ( the B string stayed in tune pretty well) even after putting locking tuners on it. Luckily I got a good enough deal on it and sold it for a slight profit. That's why I prefer top name USA guitars, I get rid of the ones I don't connect with and haven't taken any losses. This Select Tele is great and doesn't even feel or sound like it came from the same company that my bender did. I think this one is a keeper.

Good Evening Tele Select Fans,

Does anyone happen to have a photo of the pickups and harness under the hood of the 2013 American Select Telecaster Thinline. I am trying to authenticate if a used model has been modified before purchasing.

I appreciate any assistance that you can provide. I have emailed Fender Customer Relations but they cannot provide and photos. I am hoping to get the list of part numbers. I was a bit skeptical when I saw a Made In Mexico sticker on the 3-way pickup switch under the pick guard.

Thanks again,
:-)

Hi, TwinReverbII.
I wonder if this parts list/service diagram from Fender for a "normal" Select´would fit the Thinline, too - at least the 3way switch on this (part# 0992041000) is also Mexican...
