Mine arrives on Saturday. I purchased the Select with gold hardware and pearl tuning buttons.

The few reviews I've read on other sites have been very, very positive.

I'll let ya know...

Arrived and I've only had about a half hour with it. A very pretty Telecaster, IMHO. Really light and just feels terrific. P/ups seemed to be voiced a bit differently and I can't put my finger on how. More time with it will help. Bottom line is, it's a keeper...

Are the pickups voiced with a more scooped midrange tone? Looks great!

Picked up my carved Koa Top today ! It is very light, a really good looking guitar, and very comfortable to hold and play. Time will tell...

I have had my Select Tele with the flame maple top and ash body for about a week now so this is my early take. Obviously, they look great! Mine is very light and very resonant. The workmanship is impeccable! Playability is super...I really like compound radius necks.

As stated earlier, the voicing is a bit different from other teles I have owned. To me the tone seems a bit fatter, tele all the way, just a bit tamer. Juicier is a word that comes to mind. Don't get me wrong though, it can punch it out like any respectable tele. So far, I am finding it a little more versatile. I seem to be able to cover more ground with it.

These are my initial impressions regarding the tone. For me, I have to live with a guitar for a while in different situations to truly evaluate it. Anyhow, so far I really like this guitar. :D

Hi tele loungers,

several days ago went into a local fender dealer to try a 2012 Am Std tele. Its Ok but the tone was nothing special to me (even with the new addition of twisted tele neck and flatpole bridge pickups). Noticed the set of 3 select teles in the store and tried those next.
- the two carved top ones (koa and maple) without pickguards were pretty good and really light. reading up on them they are light because those bodies are empress with the carved top superimposed.
The 3rd select tele (heavier, but not a lot more) was the one most of you are talking about here with the white pickguard. WOW! Went back this aft and tested it for an hour back and forth with a 2012 Am std, and had a salesperson play both while I listened. we agreed on: neck easy to play, and right on with what John007 said above. tone is tamer, juicier fatter. but also airier and open. probably some of that is the special select pickups but also the chambered ash body has that effect on this select model (think thinline without f-hole, less punchy than regular teles). the other 2 selects have unchambered empress. This is the best sounding chambered tele I have ever heard and will go great with the jazz rhythm chords I play a lot. Only complaint with the guitar is cosmetic. On the selects I have seen (mostly photos), the two halves of the tops are not well book matched. That is ok with me because it still looks pretty good, and everything else is so great. The maple neck/fboard is incredibly figured on the above select tele.
Called up 2 high volume Fender dealers (CA and CO) and both said the same thing about the Selects:" On a continuum between Fender US factory built to Custom Shop built, the Selects are much closer to CS but are considerably less $." I have a CS Strat, so I have an idea what they mean. Have a dreadnought which should be sold by Monday, if so, then the Tele select above goes home with me. Craig H

I'm certainly not a Tele expert - I've tended to dabble in Teles (having owned 3 different Fenders and 2 G&L ASATS) but they never have really stuck. In fact my favorite "tele", the one I wish I had kept, was a G&L ASAT Special Deluxe (the early version with an "American Tilla" body with a maple top) which was definitely not a typical Tele.

That being said, I've had my Select Tele for a few weeks now and would absolutely agree with John007 and chartman - it's a bit more refined than a typical vintage-style Tele but it still has the Tele genes in it. Very easy to play and you can cover a lot of ground sonically with it. I'm still in the honeymoon phase, but I've really been happy with it.

I like that you added "airier and open" to the description of the tone. That with "juicer fatter" does a great job of summing it up.

I also noticed that in many of the online dealer photos, the two halves of the tops are not as well book matched as they could be. I think this is where a builder like Suhr has done a better job overall. The Select I chose did have a very well matched top, extraordinary in fact. Other than that, I put these right up there with Suhr. I have a Suhr S3 and it is a guitar that get a lot of use.

I got to do a live jam with the Select last night. The others guys were very impressed with the sounds that came out of it. This guitar is really growing on me!
