Compare the spec sheets. They are two totally different guitars. One is built like a vintage Blackguard with vintage appointments and tone, the other is modern. The necks are different, the pickups are different, the frets are different, the feel is different, the list goes on and on. I dare say they even sound different. The best thing to do is go to a shop that has both and try them out. FWIW, I have an AVRI 52 (with Seymour Duncan Vintage Stack Noiseless pickups) that I wouldn't trade for a modern Tele.

I was in this same situation with the same two axes.

Purely on specs I walked out with the 60th ANN...

It is so versatile I am in love.

I get most of my classic rock numbers out on it and get rich tele tone for playing Johnny Cash numbers etc.

Great Versatile axe with 22frets for all occassions.

Plus it won't hurt your wallet $
Good Luck.

Well, a dozen people can give you a dozen different opinions. Until you actually try them both out, you'll never know what YOU prefer.

I don't know what the two sell for down under, but in the States there is only a $300 difference between the two:

60th Anniversay Tele = $1400

AVRI 52 Tele = $1700

Not that significant in that price range if you ask me.

I've been out Tele hunting recently, trying many guitars, and these two models have been high on my list, you really do have to try for yourself as actually playing them for some time busted many of my preconceptions :)

I have tried out four of the 60th Anniversary model, and one of the 52 AVRI, my own impressions have changed with time ...

60th neck is modern 'C', slick to play, larger frets, flatter radius, very easy to 'fly around', eventually I found it superb playability but a bit Fender-generic, as if it could have been any modern Fender guitar (if that makes any kind of sense) , the sound was modern, bright, and the lighter two of the four I played were terrifically responsive and 'alive'. Super tasty guitar, likely most practical and versatile, beautiful feel and finish and at first it was 'buy me, buy me' :)

52AVRI neck is deeper vintage U, smaller frets, vintage radius, 'stickier' lacquer, altogether a slower neck, but it FELT more like a Tele to me, has the 3 saddle brass bridge too, which seems to impart more Tele grind, it was altogether a 'harder' guitar to play, had to put more energy in but after playing for some time, I found it had more warmth, vintage twang and personality and was overall more satisfying to me, so I'm now leaning that way, as the guitar just kind of had more fight and made me 'feel' more.

Guitars are so subjective eh :)

But these are *my* impressions, and I myself STILL haven't made up my mind, especially when there are 52 Hot Rod Tele's and others to consider, which may offer some compromise between the two. I really want to try a 52HR, as it has some modern easements while keeping many of the vintage features, and the Mini h/b can be easily swapped out for a s/c.

If you get to try them out, make them give you a 'good' amp to play through, and really spend some time, as sometimes first impressions aren't the whole story. It really is a case of what speaks to you.

Best of luck :)

p.s., just read your second post, if you're really after that vintage sound you're hearing on the records, do try and audition a vintage Tele, as what I experienced was that it was the 52 re-issue which had that warm twang with girth that I was hearing on the old recordings, it differed somehow from the modern clean and bright attack of the 60th and American Standard, that may partly be pickups, it may partly be the bridge design, overall the whole sum of the differences, but that's what I heard and chiefly which made me leave the shops with an awful lot to think about ;)

Why the big difference between the two in the Land of Oz?

My friend I ask the same question as well? $$$$

On the terms of my choice of the 60th anni, it still is a specs preference anyway as I needed a gigging player friendly Tele.

Not to say that the 52AVRI isn't player friendly but I have smaller hands. :D

Heck, that's a huge difference in price, kind of affects the decision !

And yes, what kineman said about about the 'gigging player friendly Tele', have to say the 60th just has everything tuned up for ease of playability .. so practically a much more forgiving guitar.. also perhaps because I too have smaller hands :) .. I'm still thinking hard about that one myself as it just played so nice :) Wonder what it would sound like with vintage pickups dropped in, always an option on what is in itself a really nice Tele.

I was playing my 57AVRI Strat last night, then after that my Buddy Guy which has modern enhancements and tune-ups, and thought .. yeah this is the one I'd take to a gig as it's so much more versatile and I can take more chances on it :)

Glock30...here is my opinion and story...FWIW. I had a friend who plays much of the same stuff you do...and he was looking for a good tele style instrument...and he found this really pretty BLADE by Levinson I think...had all the extras any way he wants me to go to the music store with him to check it out...so when we get there he heads straight for it, but along the way I spy a 52AVRI Tele (Used) so I grab it and he is like "Why did you grab that?" and I tell him if you are going for a tele sound, shouldn't you test it against the real thing? He was like ok...long story short, he walked out with the used 52 AVRI Tele. Why? Because for the country he played, it fit his style very well.

Now I am assuming quite a bit, but from the players and music you listed, you would be hard pressed to find any guitar let alone a modern tele sound as good for the type of music you listed there. And there is the fact that most of that music listed was done on vintage telecasters...so the 52 AVRI is probably as close as your gonna get.

HTH
