Hello Richy007,

You should spend some time at your local
music store{s} and try and determine if your
a lefty or righty player.
I have a Mex standard tele, it's fine.

Cheers.

Hey, Richy. From one 51-year-old fart to another, welcome.

Go with the Made in Mexico standard (I got one), but because I'm a superior righty to you lefties, I don't have to pay that lefty premium. (What's up with that anyway? It's the same materials, just reversed!)

Do you remember the very beginning of the drum solo to In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida? If you do that with your hands on a table, which is the hand that you're more likely to play all of those single beats in a row? If it's your left hand, learn left. If right, then righty.

That's your strumming hand, which will need more of that natural ability of rhythmic motion. Your fretting hand "just" frets the strings.

It seems like there's a few of us 51 yr olds with a MIM Standard. I love mine, if I didn't HAVE to put it down, I wouldn't.
Yeah, I would try both lh and rh models, whichever you feel more comfortable with.

Hello Richy007,

Glad you figured it out.
Did you go for maple or rosewood fretboard?

Cheers.

I think all of the Standards are maple neck, right?

Richy--get yourself over to guitarists.net and register for their forums. Then get active in the New Players and Electric Guitar forums.

You'll find a lot of great support there. Also, the site has some great learning resources, all free of course.

I'm there all of the time except during the day--for some nutty reason, my job's network blocks it, although I can get here to the Fender forums.

oh, all the standards are maple only alright.
And there is hardly any colour options, you would think they would at least have white?
I am trying to decide which colour i don't like the least before i buy, i am leaning towards the electron blue. I am considering getting a rosewood fingerboard neck from warmoth to put on it, because rosewood would look so much better. my ideal would be olympic white with rosewood (ala classic series 60s telecaster) but i can see the black working to. Why does fender neglect left handers so much?

Fender is better than some other companies when it comes to this, but it's just impossible to offer all of the models in all of the colors, so they have to make some hard choices. (It would also be pretty tough for stores to carry so much inventory.)

Add to this a lousy economy where the sales picture isn't too bright for ANYONE, so they have to be careful with what they put out there.

However, I think you're right about the rosewood option. One would expect that they would at least offer THAT, but again, now you're talking about doubling the number of Standards that the stores would have to carry. For years, I used to be a rosewood guy myself (Strat), but now, I'm maple all the way. Everyone's tastes are different and those tastes change.

I myself would love a Standard MIM made in natural ash (I love that look). I just can't, however, justify $1100 plus for an American-made just to get the color I want. Plus, I love my sunburst anyway.

To all of the lefties out there--my heart goes out to you. My wife and I are righties, but both of our sons are lefties. Makes no sense at all, and I figure I must have dropped them on their heads as babies. You are a minority, all manufacturers know it, and that's why Hendrix had to learn playing upside down. It's not a fair world, and majority rules.

Finally, to those of you still shopping:

I don't recall what the '07 Standard choices were, but I'm sure there are still new 07's available out there, and they may be in the color and neck you want. However, be aware that the 08's are shielded, making them quieter, and the pickups (pups) are improved.

I bring this up because although I've had mine about 2 months, I only started really playing it heavy a few days ago. And I gotta tell you:

This guitar is SWEET! I knew the action and feel were going to be awesome (a guitar design doesn't survive 50 plus years otherwise), but the sound of those pups is beyond belief. Rich, sweet and warm, even just playing through my tiny Roland MicroCube through its clean channel with a little bit of reverb. Adjust the pup selection, kill your reverb, turn your tone knob a bit, and you got your twang or crunch.

Simply FANTASTIC, and although in the past a lot of Standard owners swapped out their pups for better ones, no way with the '08--Fender got it right, and they're just fine. It's amazing the quality you get for 400 bucks, and they even throw in a GREAT padded gig bag, not some piece of junk.
