It's not a "telecoustic" or an "acousticaster" - they are something else.

Serial number... "V" says it's 1996-97 and the "Crafted in Japan" came in in 1997 and that fits with when I bought it.

I still have the swing tag from back then and the model number is stamped on it.

252450 (for USA)
252400 (for EXPORT)

So can anyone (I'm looking at you, Mr Fender!) tell me what the exact model name is?

Image

First knob is volume, second is an active tone control and the third is a blend control between the neck pickup and the piezo bridge.

Nothing clever around the back, just a plate covering the on-board electronics where the battery goes.

Thanks,
Alan

Hmm... I haven't seen anything like this before, well from Fender at least. Sorry to say, but I think you may have a fake in your hands. The first giveaway is on the headstock, it looks like a phony decal has been applied because 1.) The font is too large and the fender logo doesn't look like a logo from the late 90's and 2.) If you look closely it clearly looks like a decal, just look around the fender "F" for example can you see the clear outline? Although I believe this is a fake, it does have a serial #. On Fender's product dating page, look at the japanese guitars that were made in 96'-97' the serial should start with a V followed by 6 digits. The serial format is correct. Yet, how do we know it's a real serial? Can't anyone just stamp a phony serial and crafted in japan on the back of a neck? What I suggest you do is email Fender the serial and ask for specs from that guitar, in this case the model name. They will tell you if it's fake or not.
Good Luck! :D

headstock doesnt look fake to me. im pretty sure that 'outline' you think you see is actually a gold outline round the black thats supposed to be there. its exactly the same as the logo on my '72 custom.

check the logo here :

http://www.vintage-guitars.se/2002_Fender_Telecaster_Custom_'72_Reissue_Mexico_MZ0207287.htm

looks to me like some obscure limited run Japanese issue guitar, probably wasnt made for very long, probably didnt sell very well, ive never seen one either.

that or it is fake, but contacting fender will clear it up. i just done a quick google search for :acoustic telecaster', and found a few other exmaples of this guitar, with it being dated at 1996. im sure its genuine.

I would suggest that this is not a fake.

It came from a Fender authorized dealer in the UK. I bought it new from the dealer.

Had a close look at the gold outline and you are right, Moochy13. Got to say, I'd never noticed that before. Let's be honest, I'm normally stood behind the guitar, not the front view!

one of the pages i found was another forum. a guy said he had the 1996 catalogue with the guitar in, and it was simply called 'acoustic telecaster'.

Excellent!

Thanks, Moochy13.

Sad that "Acoustic Telecaster" was the best they could come up with.

1996 catalogue... Now where could I get one of those?

thanks,
Alan

Not a Fake? I'm very sorry  I guess I can see the similarity of the headstock logo on the 72' custom and after Rob's post, it made things all crystal clear! I literally have never seen this piece from Fender, not once. Thats a very interesting piece you have, sorry I had mistaken it for a fake. No hurt feelings?

Gentlemen,

Thank you all for your input. I've searched the internet to try and find anything else like this and all I really wanted to know was whether it had a catchy name I could google to see whether there were many others about.

I guess that question has been answered...

Mooch13, thanks for the initial lead.

Rob, Thanks for the confirmation - much appreciated.

Stoetz - Hurt feelings? Not 'round here! Hope you don't either.

Thanks again, guys.

Regards,
Alan

Hi Sunburst Finish

I found these two in some old price guides and a fender frontline.
The first is from the Fender Guitar & Basses brochure Volume 49 issue 1 - 1995 p15
Image
The second is from the Fender Frontline mag Fall 1996 Volume 20 p45

Hope it helps

There's at least one more of these things around because I just picked one up this weekend! Only differences I can see is that instead of "Crafted in Japan" mine says "Made in Japan" and the serial number on mine starts with "U" instead of "V." Otherwise they're identical.

Glad to know it's not a fake and thanks to everyone who has posted information on what these things really are.

"U" is just the year before mine so it's 1995-96

They changed from "Made in Japan" to "Crafted in Japan" sometime in 1997 so it's simply a year or so earlier.
