I am in the process of having my own Andy Summers Telecaster made, and in the process I made an interesting discovery. The dating of Andy's Telecaster may be wrong. The Tribute model says this was a 1961 Telecaster, reflecting what most internet sources say. The Zenyatta Andatta site, which has the best overview of his equipment, dates the guitar at 1963.

I found that the body was likely 1964 based on 2 things: the serial number (which is the same serial number stamped on all the Tribute neck plates) is L27595, which dates the guitar at 1964. Also, the finish changed in 1964 from a more subtle color transition sunburst to the more harsh transition seen on Andy's guitar, as a result of Fender no longer staining on the yellow finish. The neck is not from 1964...the 60's necks were rosewood fretboards, and I have read that any custom maple necks from that era had a maple veneer fretboard over the trussrod, rather than solid maple with a walnut skunk stripe. Andy's neck was probably a 1958 or so neck, based on it's shape. One source I read said that Andy called it a 1958 neck in an interview.

So I found this interesting. Some people may not care I suppose. I wrote Fender, and the reply I got back was sort of a "shrug" this is what Andysummers.com says. But if you have the serial number, I would think that would be the most accurate dating method! It's not really that hard.

I've already built my own and love it. For what it's worth I wouldn't get too wrapped around the axle about it.

Show us some photos when you're done.

Not "wrapped around the axle" (I don't think I am that is)...I just found it interesting that Fender put out the guitar and missed this point.

alainlafrance: the point is that the serial number pegs the guitar (or at least part of it...the body) as a 1964 Tele, however all sources on the internet, including Fender's info on the guitar and sites devoted to Andy Summers say the guitar is a 1961 guitar or a 1963 model.

Anyway, yes, I will post pics once it is completed. Hoping to get it in June. I just scored a cool Olive green tweed G&G case with the Fender Amp logo for it. Extra cool since my band's name is Green Army Men...the olive tweed is perfect!
