KOE...with that title I think this one might be a loaded question, but I too dig the Esquire over the tele...EVERY Esquire I have ever played had more bite to it...I have no idea why...they just do!

...there's no routing hole for the neck pickup. So, more mass means more sustain?; obviously, the neck pickup area is a critical vibratory transmittal point on the guitar (it's close to where the neck meets the body, channels the vibrations towards the bottom, etc.)?

Esquires have been routed for 2 pickups since the first two pickup guitars were introduced. They continue to be routed for 2 pickups as far as I know. Leo didn't want to waste time or dollars on two different routes for the same body.
