On a rare occasion, I bought a guitar "new"... couldn't resist the new American Deluxe Tele (parting ways with an American Nashville B-Bender). Maybe needless to say, but I love the Tele! It's easily my favorite guitar I've touched yet... even compared to a friends Custom Shop Tele purchased from ProGuitarShop, which itself is a fantastic guitar. Just to say, they just keep getting better at making these damn things!

It's construction is primo and I can't say enough about it, however I'm experiencing one little intermittent problem... the neck pickup goes out on occasion. It is simply resolved by tapping on the pick-up housing. Could it be a short, or bad solder.

Being new, I wanted to get it looked at w/ a authorized repair guy / warranty work, but he's about 1 hour away. The guitar is still really new and warranty should cover anything in case it's something more expensive like the pick-up itself (which I'm doubting). Before I just "live-with it" and loose a warranty time period, does this sound like a typical or "likely" problem to anyone? Easy do-it-yourself fix? I'm just afraid I lug it out to the repair guy and he catches it working and overlooks the problem (assuming it's minute).

thanks for any input!

BTW, I've shared here a few months ago, but when I got the guitar, I recorded a song and video with the new Tele. It can be seen here:

Return for warranty service. Yes this could be a bad solder, broken wire ........

First thing I'd do is unscrew the control plate, flip it over and spray a little contact cleaner on the switch. Work the switch back and forth a couple of times. That may fix it. Beyond that you probably don't want to mess with it too much considering it's new. Good luck.

Send it back.

I bought a brand new American Deluxe in Butterscotch Blonde around this time last year. Upon delivery, it was easily the best Guitar I'd ever played or owned. The finish and build quality was immacculate. The action was so low with no buzz it was ridiculously good.

Then, after about two weeks, the output in the neck pickup dropped by about 90% and rendered the S1 switching useless. Rather than trying to fix it myself, I brought it back to the dealer where I bought the Guitar. The Guitar was sent away to the UK where it spent the next 3 months. When the dealer was finally able to get a reply and status on the Guitar, he was told it may be another 6 months as they were waiting on a part to come in from the US. They did offer a full refund which I took. I went out and bought another deluxe and thankfully did not have the same problem.

If it has the N3 pickups, it's not a surprise.
Fender should never have gotten rid of the Samarium Cobalt noiseless pickups, which I love on a Tele. I think that the N3s have a questionable sound quality, and all you hear about are problems...

Great minds think alike!!

What's happening Miami Mike?
I've been sort of busy lately, and if I'm not getting emails from forumadmin@fender.com, I sometimes forget to tune in.

Whatever is shorting is an easy fix for those who routinely deal with such things. A bad solder joint is in fact, a short just as is any an intermittent connection. Having said this, if the the pickup happens to be working when a repair person looks it over, again, if said person routinely deals with such things, (s)he can find and correct the problem quickly, regardless.

dealt w/almost identical issues on a recent build, and it turned out to be a bit too much wire left on a solder joint (on the 3-way) that intermittently touched the next closest "eyelet" on the 3-way.....purely my bad, and a 30 second fix!

make sure the solder joints(everywhere) don't have extra wire hanging from them.

I can examine and I can solder..... but I can't diagnose. This one's going to my local Fender Auth. repair tech. I'll report back what the deal is w/ it!
