This is a MIJ '69 tele thinline RI. I bought it one year ago.The seller told me it was 4 or 5 years. I believed him ,the guitar looked brand new :D - but later I began to seriously doubt it .It does not mean so much to me to know , but I am getting a bit curious to know . It seems like dating a japanese tele is quite a puzzle- not exactly straight forward ! I just replaced the original neck pickup with a DiMarzio Twang King - and that was pure awesomeness!
I took it to the local GC and let a couple of guys working there , play it . It was satisfying to hear them say it was the most phenomenal guitar they had played! They have lots of Fenders there, but they had never seen or played a MIJ before. I got credits for choosing it , and setting it perfectly up

One of the reasons I started to wonder of her age , was a sticker at the backside of the headstock, probably from the shop it was purchased from. The telephone number there , was from a number series which was ended ca 10 years ago, in my country !

The serial number is stamped into the bridge plate , and says A04XXXX
It may be of some interest that there is no 'skunk-stripe' on the back of the neck - the fretboard is glued to the neck. I guess the frb radius is 7.25'' And the neck is C-shaped

Thank You for your interest :D

A + six digits = 1985 - 1986.

Hello, Martian!Thank you for replying!

Your answer makes sense - but I have researched a bit , and among many things, this came up :

'A + 6 DIGITS 1985-1987, 1997-1998 (Made in Japan) and (Crafted in Japan) This was one of the most confusing serial uber used by Japan. They placed the "A" on the bridge on the Telecasters and some of them could be as late as 1996 (as in the case with many JD Teles. Maybe the transitional guitars from MIJ to the CIJ??)'

This is found here :

-and that confused me a bit......
I remember reading things like that earlier also - so I am still a bit confused....
Anyway - love this guitar :D

Greetings and you're quite welcome.

The "Made in Japan" was controlling to me. Regardless, the most important issue is that you are enjoying the guitar. :D

ive got a MIJ '62 custom, with a serial number that gives me a build date of 85-86, same as yours, same type of serial number. i know for fact this is the right date for when the guitar was built, as i brought it off the original owner.

Thanks. Nice guitar, that '62 ! I think I stick to the theory of yours , and Martian. I like the idea of that it is as old as that :)
But there is still a tiny chance that it is a bit younger , if they have mixed up w the same types of s/n later.....
I'll be keeping that old sticker w. telephone number at the back side , just for the nostalgia of it :)

Cheers!
