Since everyone hears things differently regarding guitar sounds, it's probably best
for you to testdrive one at a local shop. Good luck!

Xavier105,

I own both the Classic Series '72 and the AV '72. Both are great guitars. I'm a Tele addict, so that's the reason I have both. (My Classic '72 is set up Keith Richards style - 5 string in Open G)

To be honest with you - it's hard to justify the $800 difference unless you "just have to have" the AV '72, like I did. The Classic Series '72 is an outstanding guitar and will do everything you want.

Soundwise, there is very little difference between the two. Certainly not $800 worth. The AV '72 still doesn't put you into the original 1972 Seth Lover humbucker sound.

Also - another Tele you may want to look at is the '72 Deluxe reissue. I found one of these used, in mint condition (still had the plastic over the humbuckers), about a year ago. It has double humbuckers, with a much fatter (I think 12 inch radius) neck. It's the only guitar I own with that big of a neck, and I really enjoy playing it. It also has the big, fat Strat headstock of that era, but you'll learn to put up with it.

Both of my '72 Custom's are black w/ the maple neck, but they also have a black w/ rosewood neck and the 3-tone 'burst w/ a maple neck. I'm kinda thinking about getting another w/ the 3-tone 'burst...

Also - check out the '72 Thinline if you like the double humbucker sound. They are also available both as an AVRI and a Classic Series - again - both very nice Telecasters.

Good luck!

RickyD

Howdy!

From what I see you're decidedly a HUGE Rolling Stones' fan and you also use the capo like Keef himself.

Keith has a wide variety of guitars in his arsenal, including "Malcolm" and "Micawber". For a short period in the late 1980s he played a hardtail Music Man Silhouette with HSH pickups on certain songs.

RickyD,
I thought the 72 AV had a rewound bridge pick up modeled after the seth lover? I almost bought that guitar, I ended up with a 72 tele deluxe, which I LOVE!!! I took out the 250m pots and upgraded to 500m, and they sound great!
