hi, im new here. been playing for about 10 years, though not much these days, sort of lost my impoteus when bandmates went off to uni/foreign jobs etc.

anyways, i brought this guitar off my dads friend for 200 GBP 5 or 6 years ago, after 'looking after it' for a year or so and using it to gig with. this guitar set me as a telecaster man, i love them.

im not sure about much about the guitar unfortunately. my dads friend got it for his 16th birthday, i think hes in about his mid-late 40's now. which by my math makes the guitar at least early-mid 80's.

its a Japanese sunburst 1962 custom, rosewood board, maple neck. i know the japanese guitars from this era are quite well repsected, last time i was in a guitar shop i mentioned to the owner i had this guitar, first thing he said was "is it a japanese one? niiiice" condition wise, its a solid 8-9 out of 10. was barely used before i got hold of it, and as i mentioned its not seen much use since. theres a tiny ding in the lacquer - not through to the stain/wood - and i did have the nut replaced as i got a bit ambitious fitting big bluesy 13's to it, and the nut cracked at the low E. oops. no ashtray either. im 99% sure everything else is original.

heres a quick pic - i love this guitar. i have to be honest, i wish it had a maple board, i prefer them, but at the price i paid i know i did alright.

any extra info greatly appreciated, cheers.

edit - haha just seen the pic - the guitar is pretty filthy in the pics, its not as bad as it looks. thats probably spit and beer from about 7 years ago

As far as I know these are still in production, I've seen a few adverts for them, but I don't think they come with a hard case such as the one you have there.

Here's a link to one at Nevada Music (in the UK).

theres a similar post in the forum about a 72 thinline that i replied in, as the OP heard that his thinline could have been a lot younger than my custom. i know for sure mine is '85-'86, as i purchased it off its only previous owner, who as i said got it for his birthday in the '80's, and that tallies up with my serial number.

the case is not a fender one, just one i brought to put it in. i had the guitar valued at around 900 GBP a few years ago.

was i being led up the garden path ? at 27 years old and in very decent condition i would expect it be worth more than the on you linked to ??

thanks for the info though. i didnt even know fender were still making guitars in japan. i thought everything moved to mexico.

I used to own one of these guitars. They are great. Sold mine for a Strat Plus, but always missed it.

I seem to recall them going for $450 to $500 used. But you might get more. They are highly sought after. In '06 I bought one with a Bigsby vibrato on it. I traded it for a guitar for my son and the deal had a buyer on the phone within 20 minutes.

Here's a pick of my version of Andy Summers' Tele I had built in '07.

I hope this information helps.

that tele looks amazing. oh how i wish that neck was on my guitar :D :D :D :D i much prefer maple. a shop local to me also once had a bigsby equipped '62 custom in. i couldnt believe my eyes whe i saw it, it was stunning. out of my price range though. and i think it was american made as oppose to japanese. im not surprised the dealer managed to punt it on so quickly. its the only time ive ever seen one.

Thanks! I'm very proud all the work that has gone into the guitar. I really want an Andy Summers Tele, but the price is insane.
I really hope Fender will make a production model. I've asked Mike Eldred about this and he tells me that maybe one day. cost seemed to be the big issue.

I was thinking that if Fender were to make them like they do the Am. Special (MIM & MIA) and without reliquing it, then I think they would be able to bring down the price to something a little more managable.

I had mine built for about $1,200 (parts and labour).

I just started playing one of these. As nice as any Tele I've ever picked up. I love rosewood necks on Teles! The MIJ 62 necks are my favorites...Strats and Teles! Right up there for me with the SRV neck for comfort...I like 'em chunky.
I've seen them go for $700 =/- on EB and CL. I totally dig this guitar...I don't think I'd sell it for that.
