Hi geniuses,
Can you please help me figure out if this guitar is an authentic Telecaster hot rod ’52 reissue?
Thanks!
Joe

The photos look right to me; what makes you doubt it's authentic?

I just had a funny feeling when I saw that the chrome plate holding the neck was blank. I thought every Fender had a print (serial number or other marks) on the plate.
I guess it's just fine then :)
Thanks for your help.
Joe

Was that neck pick-up standard issue on the Telecaster hot rod ’52 reissue? (please forgive the noob query; still learning : )

The Seymour Duncan mini humbucker in the neck is correct spec for the '52 Hot Rod, and the neck plate is blank because the serial number is stamped on the bridge plate.

Looks like a fine Tele! :)

Just to second what Butterscotch has already posted: on both the Hot Rod '52 and the "regular" AV '52 the neck plate is blank and the serial number is on the bridge plate - just like Fender did them back in the day.

That Duncan Firebird neck pickup is correct for that model also - although there was either an FSR version or a "Thin Skin" version available a couple of years ago that had a full-sized humbucker instead of the Firebird.

So it seem like the rule book was chucked away with this model, what with using non-Fender componentry. Why was it called the Hot Rod? And how do they sound compared to the Tele Standard?

Comparing the Hot Rod '52 to the Tele Standard (either MIM or USA) isn't really fair; you would want to compare it to a regular AV '52. The Hot Rod has several changes from the regular AV '52 with the goal of giving some fairly common mods from back in the day:

1. Neck pickup swapped to a humbucker. This was a fairly common mod as a lot of players back in the 50s and 60s didn't like the tone of the neck pickup but loved the bridge pickup, so they swapped in other pickups that they could find - typically a Gibson humbucker. Look at Albert Collins, Keith Richards, Andy Summers (that sunburst Custom Tele or his already had the humbucker in the neck slot). Hey, Fender didn't even get hip to this until 1972 when they brought out the Tele Custom, which had their own Wide-Range humbucker and also had Les Paul style controls (separate volumes and tone and an LP-style toggle switch). For the Hot Rod '52 this case they chose to use a Duncan Firebird-style mini-humbucker.

2. Neck shape - the Hot Rod has a thicker neck with a modern 9.5" radius and a thin satin nitro finish and medium jumbo frets. The regular AV '52 neck is a bit thinner in depth, has the vintage correct 7.25" radius, small frets, and a fairly thick glossy nitro finish.

3. Wiring - I'm pretty sure the Hot Rod has modern wiring where the 3-way switch settings are neck pickup/both pickups/bridge pickup and the tone is a master tone. The regular AV '52 has vintage wiring where the 3 way switch settings are neck pickup with a treble roll-off capacitor/neck pickup with the tone control active/bridge pickup with the tone control active.

Other than that the cosmetics, bridge pickup, body, and bridge are the same between the Hot Rod '52 and the regular AV '52.

Hope that helps.

The Telebration version featured a full-sized HB.
