I've decided to buy a tele, but I'm finding a huge range of diferences in the telecaster line. I'm just starting out here, so excuse my "wet-behind-the-ears-ness"

Why three neck types? "C" "U" and "V". What are the benifits of each type? What would make me choose one neck type over another (Hand size? Speed? Rhythm vs lead? or just "It feels better to me" personal preference?)

Thanks in advance.

Hey there,
I'm new here so you probably won't get your answer from me but, last week when purchasing my first telecaster i went through about 7 guitars choosing the one which played best and felt best to my standards. it was the most expensive! I'm actually unsure what neck mine has i shall look it up!

Cheers,

Jared.

And what do 'C' 'U' and 'V' stand for? V is for vintage I'm guessing

The letters correspond to the shape of the back of the neck - as if you say cut part of the neck off at like the 3rd fret - one would look like a "C", one would have a flatter bottom and look like a "U", and one would taper down more and look like a "V".

Of course back in the day Fender just kind of migrated from one shape to another - the original Broadcasters/early Teles had the "U" neck; as the 50s wore on and the Strat was introduced the necks got more of a "V" shape (circa late 56 through 58 or so); by 59 or so they were more of the "C" shape.

By the 1980s Fender and other companies started making different shapes available for purchase - in Fender's case it was by specific model; it was more the replacement part companies making different shapes available.

You guys are all welcome.

I finally did find a chart of Fender-style neck shapes - I have seen this a few times:

I also this article on Fender's site in the news/tech talk section:

can there be different sizes of each neck type ? im sure i read in a fender catalogue when buying my '72 custom that the neck "felt like half a baseball bat". it certainly fills my large palms, and feels great. but can you get the same shape but smaller, or larger

In general I do'nt think so. If you're looking for a neck go after market. Warmoth and Allparts are good places to start.

So from all this I am surmising that the C shape would be best for smaller hands?

Cos the U shape sounds like for larger mitts and the V well, I don't know how anyone can play that kind of neck, the illustrations are surely exaggerated I do understand that.

Yes, a modern "C" shape is quite good for small hands.

Another question is if you want to play "thumb over" or not. Some shapes make that easier than others.

Cheers

David
