So Over the years I've had folks on this forum bad mouth the Tele as not being able to used for Heavy Metal.

It's true (we've all heard this) that Jimmy Page used a Tele for years with Led Zepplin.

Well I've been a fan of, "That Metal Show" for a few years now and I've noticed a lot of guitarists playing some form of Tele. And they sound amazing!

I'd like to build a list of heavy metal players using Teles. GIve me your list.

Not really a 'metal' guitarist (in the traditional sense anyway) but what about Tom Morello of RATM?

^This guy shows you gan get pretty much any sound you want out of a tele (or any guitar for that matter).
I think fx pedals have really destroyed the notion of certain guitars for certain styles.
With the right settings on mine I can get anything from a Metallica/thrash sound to a thicker Deftones/detuned style sound out of my MIM standards stock pickups.

It's true that Teles have that country twang. On the other hand, if you crank enough distortion on, guitars all sound pretty much the same regardless (fuzz, dirt, grunge).

That is not true. I use a ton of distortion, and different guitars sound completely different through distortion. The Tele has more of a raw, jagged sound and the Strat has a smoother sound. And Teles are great for heavy music. Dropped D sounds great on a Tele and palm muting sounds good as well. I don't understand why more metal guitarists don't use them.

Agreed. I've got a buddy of mine who plays a Jim Roo Tele and his recordings sound amazing. I think he's in a thrash metal band.

I have a regular single coil Tele and it sounds mean and nasty through distortion. You don't need humbuckers to play metal if you have the right pedals.

Someone had sad something about the raw sound of the Tele and it got me thinking.

I just played a gig (not metal) and I got some really wonderful raw dirty counds out of my Andy Summers inspired Tele. I'm using a Zack Wylde Overdrive pedal and a Peavey Delta Blues Amp.

i have always played heavy music and way way back i would have never considered a telecaster since it did not fit that style of music or so i thought, then one day at a jam a guy had one, during a break (i was playing bass) i picked it up to play around with it while everyone was outside ahemm getting some fresh air ;) anyway when i lit this thing up through the amp i was (I'm not exaggerating) in shock it was the meanest dirtiest heaviest thing i had heard, this was back in the metal heyday and it did not sound flashey heavy but mean street fighter heavy, i have played a tele since and still play heavy music, in my opinion it is the best guitar for metal, there is a demo on youtube of a orange rockerverb amp and they use a tele to demo it and a lot of comments underneath are people shocked at how heavy the amp sounds "even through a tele" but i know it's the tele helping sell the amp and orange knows most people have that miss conception about a telecaster and use it to their advantage knowing it's actually the tele making that amp sound that MEAN. just my opinion

Mike Mulholland of Emmure uses both a Tele and a Strat in the course of their shows. And as a guitarist who got the Blacktop Baritone Telecaster for the express purpose of playing metal, I can say that the Telecaster sounds amazing cranking out some heavy riffs. To be honest, this guitar makes my Ibanez 7-string sound like a Danelectro (not knocking them, they're just the least metal-sounding guitar I can think of atm).

I do not consider humbuckers in a Telecaster a Telecaster in the tradional sense, the way that Leo Fender designed them. These are just modern interpretations of the original design. I think a traditional Telecaster can play an array of musical styles, including metal. Single coil PUP's are great for note defination and clarity, which humbuckers do not provide. With todays techology and equipment, any single coil PUP can be quiet and as powerful sounding as a humbucker, but with more articulation and note defination. IMHO.

Nice observation. :)

I very much agree. I always felt like HB hide bad playing. Greg Koche, Fender's hired gun Tele player (and a mazing guitarist) always says (and I'm paraphrasing), then there is bad playing on a Tele the "suck" switch is on.

My Andy Summers inspired Tele has a HB in the neck, Boardcaster pickup in the bridge and an After Burner volume boost pot. I can totally get some great sounds out of this guitar. It's great for Heavy Metal, country, blues, jazz, and rock.
