For one thing quit using barbed wire for strings!

All kidding aside that is some serious wear for a fairly new guitar, but it doesn't appear to be that much different from the wear patterns you see on vintage Fenders and that people pay extra for on the Relics.

How deeply are you gouging into the wood in the areas where the finish has worn away? And also what guage and brand of strings are you using?

I think you should post this question on the "ask Mike Eldred Custom Shop" thread. I'll explain why.

As you probably know, the Highway 1 bodies were nitro finish, but the necks were satin urethane finish. What it looks like in the pictures to me is that this neck got missed for the Urethane clear coat, which would be a manufacturer oversight.

It looks a bit like a fungus.

Cheers

Please explain further I'm a little confused? So Fender screwed up?

Quite possibly. I believe Mike could verify this more accurately, as I'm sure he's familiar with steps of neck finishing.

It looks as if it was never clear coated and the stain is wearing off. The headstock even looks like it wasn't clear coated.

I'd post the pictures in this thread and ask Mike. viewforum.php?f=22

I will probably get torched for this.

This is completely normal for the Highway 1 Series of guitars. The thin nitro lacquer finish wears like this. It is normal, you should not worry about it, and Fender will likely not consider it a flaw.

If you bought it new, it should've come with a disclaimer about the finish in the sealed book bag.

The highway 1 telecaster is no longer listed on the products page of this site, but the Highway 1 strat is. If you look it up, you'll notice the neck is satin urethane finish, not nitro (the body is nitro). http://www.fender.com/products/search.p ... 0111162306

Maybe so, but, that doesn't disregard the fact that this is normal and expected for a Hwy. 1. I have seen many used with the fretboard in this condition.

I personally think the line was fantastic, and Fender shouldn't have discontinued it. But, it does come with a disclaimer about the finish wearing fast. AND, the disclaimer is NOT exclusive to the body.

Its actually wearing smoothly. Its not rough at all. I use Earnie ball .9-42 gauge pink pack
Should I buy some yellow wood stain and try to fix it?
Your saying the wear is normal for an old guitar, but not a new one?

As long as it is wearing smoothly you're going to be okay. What I meant by my comment was that your guitar has gotten the wear marks pretty quickly - in a bit more than a year your guitar looks like it has a decade or more wear on it. I wouldn't try to fix it; it has an authentically worn look to it like a vintage guitar.

I was curious about the strings in case you were using some brand noted for being rought; EB .009s are pretty smooth so no issues there.

I just got my Hwy 1 in today, brand new 3-TSB/maple. The finish on it's neck is not the same as the finish on my other maple MIA strats. The Hwy has a very thin satin finish on the fingerboard versus the thick gloss on the American standard strat neck. I'll assume the standard tele has the same neck treatment (thick and glossy).

Learn a new song. :D

I'm just messin' with ya there. It looks like a thin finish on the neck. It's one of the reasons I generally stay away from maple necks.
