Are paint/lacquer cracks typical on Mexican tele at point where neck is bolted on to body? Looking to purchase beautiful blue agave Mexican tele, however, has cracks on edge of body on each side of neck where it attaches to body. Don't figure it affects sound, however, was wondering if they get worse, or if they can be repaired. It appears as though they're just cosmetic and run diagonally across edge of body - about 1-2 inches.

I'm not sure without seeing a photo, but 1-2 inch lacquer cracks seem to be a bit extreme to me. Perhaps the body to neck join is a little too snug?

very common to mexis pre 2000.... mostly due to hold and cold environments, drops and mis use...... i see a lot of these guitars cracked right there... typical if the guitar was the guys "first guitar".... i think early mexis used a thinner body so more prone to cracks................. hope that helps....

My Tele i bought from a pawn shop also has those cracks. So, I guess I can now assume that it was MIM and around 2000. Thanks.

No. I bought another guitar from the same guy, it plays and looks like heaven.

I have a question along the same lines ...I just bought an American Standard and it has a VERY small hairline crack near the neck. Its not even as long as my pinky nail ..I have small hands (female) I took it to the dealer and was told that it was not in the wood just the paint. But if I wanted it fixed they would see what they could do...is this normal for an American Standard? I mean that is what I was told. That the pressure sometimes from bolting the neck on will crack the finish.

wow... this is more common than i had prior thought.... i had only ever seen older poorly trated mexis do this.... it makes sense that it would be due to over torquing the neck... (something i have been guilty of totally..)

I've got about a 1 cm crack on along the the joint where the neck meets the block on my US G&L Legacy. And it's certainly a nice guitar, and I'm good friends with the former owner and I know he took care of it...
