Hello there, I own a MIM '72 Telecaster Deluxe and my friend owns an Ibanez GIO.

I have been having a bunch of problems with my tele regarding getting the sound I want and they way I want the strings to work. To help describe this I'm going to use the experience of playing my friend's Ibanez GIO to compare.

No matter how hard I try I cannot seem to get the string bends I want combined with a lot of pain such as bending the B string from 18th to 20th (reference freebird solo) yet I can do this comfortably with less effort and bending on my friend's GIO. Another thing is that his (and other people's guitars of varying makes) seem to produce a better sound than mine including those with the same guitar (josh farro for example), they can all go deeper, have more twang when required and less when not. They all generally sound better in every single circumstance including unplugged. I get some fret buzz too particularly between the 9th and 12th frets on the A string. My friend has none of these issues on his GIO.

I'm fairly sure that these problems are mostly if not all related to the strings and their physics which are influenced by the guitar's setup. I would very much appreciate advice of how to get that good sound, good feel, painless experiences out of my guitar along the lines of truss rod adjustments, various string materials and gauges, bridge adjustments and anything else that YOU think is relevant and/or helpful.

I'm afraid to say it almost hurts me inside to think that I can't get a good quality sound out of my guitar unless I use power chords and a Boss DS-1 Distortion pedal.

Sounds like you need a setup. Too much neck relief can definitely make the guitar painful to play, cause buzzing when notes are fretted up the neck, and choke out bent notes. Check out the Telecaster setup guide:

If there's anything you don't feel comfortable with, just ask and I'm sure someone here will have answers for you. Otherwise you can always take the guitar to a good luthier to have it set up. You may want to try a lighter set of strings too. It's all about finding the balance that works for you. Once you get the neck relief and action in shape, you can adjust the pickup height to optimize the sound. Good luck!

I agree. You need to get the guitar properly set up. Also look at your amp. A good amp can make a world of difference.
