I decided to try a set of APTR-1/APTL-1 pickups with the Alnico II magnets on my MIA standard tele... The stock pickups are great, but I was curious to see how the different magnets would affect the tone...

My expectations were low as most pickups changes are... I am usually disappointed by the lack of change in most pickup swaps...

But these pickups did do exactly... I mean exactly... what I wanted them to do... They got rid of that "ice pick" sound... what I consider a harsh twang... But the guitar still has that signature telecaster sound....

I suppose however if you are wanting that typical country twang from the bridge position, I would not recommend this pickup change...

Also, these pickups have significantly less volume than the Alnico 5's...

The neck pickup sound is outstanding... Big improvement... especially with overdrive....

I am not sure why alnico II's don't come standard in more tele's... I know there is the noCaster... but I don't recall too many more teles that come standard with Alnico II's

Nocasters are Alnico 3's.

I had the APTR Alnico II Pro's in my Tele for a while. I ended up dropping them for a Seymour Duncan Broadcaster in the bridge. The APTR's were too... polite sounding for my taste.

I no very little about nocasters... but I assumed they had alnico IIs because of this video...

Thanks for letting me know they are alnico 3's

I will have to say most tele owners will not want to put these pickups in their guitar... But, I really really like the added warmth and the reduction in "harshness" these pickups bring... But then again I am a jazz player by trade... so, that may be the reason...

Oh for sure. If jazz is your bag then I'm sure these pickups will be great for you! They're very clear and articulate. I play a lot of classic rock and garage rock and like I said, I found them to be just too smooth. But that's just my taste. Seymour Duncan has quite a few Tele pickups - lots of different flavours for lots of different styles.

If you all would like I can play a really nice jazz version of "Blue Skies" on this telecaster... It may be interesting to see jazz played on a telecaster with these pickups.... I can post it up on youtube...

Any interest ?

I had a Koa Tele with the APTRs. They sounded good with drive, clean not so good. YMMV

I ended up getting regular Am Std Tele with stock pups. Much better all the way around.

Great sound. Thank you for posting. Nearly made me want to change my custom Squire Affinty pickups.
