Fender Japan made a 22-fret version in 1984. The 22-fret Elite Telecaster lasted only 2 years before the series being dropped in 1986.

And those Fender Japan Elites were never imported to the USA by FMIC/Fender; the only ones that have turned up here were originally purchased elsewhere and either brought to the USA by the original owner or purchased by someone here on the used market.

To those of us in the USA the Elites ended when CBS production ceased (or perhaps a final few were assembled in early 1985 after FMIC took over, assuming there were still Elite bodies, necks and hardware available for assembly).

In fact I had never heard of the Fender Japan Elites until I came on this board and saw chromeface's posts.

The Japanese Elites were made by Fender Japan for the domestic market.

The Gold and Walnut were not part of the series. Only the regular "Elite" with chrome parts and tremolo was retained and offered under the reference EST '83-110 at ¥ 110000 with 3-Tone Sunburst, Black, Vintage White and Candy Apple Red finishes. The Japanese Elite is fitted with all of the innovative features first displayed on its US counterpart, and as such, shares the same specifications. This also holds true for the Japanese Standard introduced under the reference '83-80 at ¥ 800000 and available in 3-Tone Sunburst, Black and Olympic White.
However, in both cases, Fender Japan left its mark in the form of a 22-fret fingerboard compared to the standard 21-fret fingerboard found since the early 50s on all Stratocasters and Telecasters made in the US.

The Precision Elite also shared a 22-fret neck and a downsized body to accomodate the two extra frets.
