I read this article http://gc.guitarcenter.com/fender-american-series/ and was wondering when these changes took place and are there any years to stay away from the Am. Std. because of lesser components :?:

I believe the year was 2008. The necks on the Strat & Tele are very smooth & playable.

Thanks! I'm probably going to buy one then. I didn't realize until recently that MIA's could be had for well under $1000  :)

The MiM Tele Standards are all 'new spec' right now, apparently with better and smoother necks, with a different 'surface' but pick ups are unchanged.

The backs of the necks didn't change. What changed is that where they used to finish the entire neck with a satin finish, now they just do the back of the neck that way. The fretboard and front of the headstock are done in a gloss finish to give it a nicer look.

The bridges were changed in 2008 to the bent-saddle style (replacing the cast saddles). On the Telecaster, the bridgeplate was also changed to chrome plated brass with the "Fender" logo cast in the plate.

Also the body finishes were apparently changed to be thinner - but YMMV on whether that actually makes any difference.

Those are the changes in a nut shell.

As far as I know, the pickups did not change at all.

And a good choice by Fender to have made those changes IMO.
