I have a 2010 Am. Dlx. I noticed that the pickups were a bit hot. When I tried to lower the neck pickup i could not adjust the bass side of the pickup and would not lower nor raise in height.
I removed the pick guard and found that the height adjustment screw seemed to be driven in as far as it could go. It looks like it was cranked up tight and then stripped. The screw turns yet will not thread turning counter clockwise. It is an easy fix however I can't get the height adjustment screw out of the pickup base. The screw turns easily.

Any one got any ideas?

Thanks in advance

I believe the threaded inserts in the pickups may be made of brass. You may have stripped that and not the screw.

In any case, use a large pair of wire cutters to cut the screw off below the pickup base. You should be able to back the screw out then.

If the hole in the pickup base is stripped, what then? A new pickup?

This guitar had many hardware issues from the day I bought it. Screw holes stripped, strap locks that have had to be doweled and re-drilled, jack cup fell out (replaced with an electrosocket) string ferrules fall out when I change strings. and now when I want to adjust my pickup height they have driven the screws in so far as to strip the hole in the pickup base. The thing is, I love the way the guitar plays. I gig almost every weekend so I usually fix my own gear and this thing requires constant attention. It has become my "number one" but is the most unreliable piece of crap I have ever owned. I love it. It seems to hate me for some reason.

Sorry for the rant.........uh, will I need to buy a new pickup? I'll probably rig my own design first. Thanks for the advice.

In a pinch, you may be able to

1) Cement a nut to the bottom of the pickup.

2) Or (I have done this) go to your local hardware store and find the next size up screw, and tap the hole for that size. On brass baseplates of Dimarzio pickups, I have been able to just force a larger screw in by force.

3) Direct mount the pickup to the wood (like a P-bass or Ernie Ball Music Man). Put weather stripping under the pickup, and get long wood screws, like the type that come in a P-bass pickup box. You may need to ream the hole out in the pickup base for the larger wood screw. The foam will hold the pickup in place. Google mounting instructions for a P-bass pickup and you'll see what I mean. Then you can say you think it sounds better like EVH. ;)

Always good to help a fellow gigging musician, good luck!
