I'm thinking about upgrading the humbuckers on my 72 reissue telecaster, and have a few questions. Do most people think that the stock pick ups are pretty decent? I played my buddy's Les Paul with burstbuckers, and they sounded great. How do yall think they would sound on the fender? What are the best fender humbuckers? I play mostly rock, not too heavy, but often use the high gain channel on my Mesa Rectoverb. Anyways, what pick ups should be on my short list? Thanks in advance for any input.

I have the deluxe version, I have had it for about 19 months. I find the humbuckers really good for everything I play-blues, rock, classic rock, ed sheeran type stuff too. It's really good. How do you feel about the pickups yourself? If the answer is, you like them, then keep them-it is not true that one must upgrade the pickups on a mexican fender, however it actually sounds. If the answer is, you're not sure, you think it could be better, then keep them for a month or so, see how you feel about them then, and then change them out if you want to.

I'm not sure about possible replacement pickups, I haven't tried any. My advice would be to not go for anything too high gain or rock type pickups, like some EMG's for example, because the guitar isn't really like that.

Is the guitar new? If so, you may "grow into" it in the next month or two, and discover that actually, you really like the pickups.

Hope that helps :D

Thanks for the reply. I too have the deluxe, and have had it for over a year, and let me tell you, its been played. I do suspect that there may be some wiring/switch issues, but after playing the Les Paul with the burstbuckers through the same rig that I always play through, I've come to the realization that the two are one two completely different levels. I know that the guitars are different beasts, but I just have to assume that putting the same pickups in the two guitars, they would at least sound similar. Anyways, I am definitely not looking for anything super hot, I'm looking for a humbucker on the smooth/clear side.
Really wondering if Fender has some good options.
Thanks again for the input.

I'm not too clued up on pickup options, I haven't been there myself yet. But looking in the products section of the fender website I can't see much in the way of humbuckers. Seymour Duncan, DiMarzio and the Gibson Burstbucker options look like good choices from other brands. Also consider the Bare Knuckle brand, although I think some of their pickups are especially hot.

Sorry I'm not so helpful here, but there are many people with lots of wisdom in this area, on this forum that can help you.

I mess a lot with different pups. I have a tele with a john Birch hyperflux at the neck, which is stunning but you'll struggle to find one of those. I have another with SD hot rails in the bridge and a SD p90 at the neck and that is also great, but the p90 isn't a humbucker, if that's what you want. I've owned a lot of Dimarzio's and have never been disapointed. SD are also great. Bare knuckle are a bit hit and miss and can be expensive, in my opinion, although the build quality and after sale service is second to none. Will you need to do some chopping to get a bucker in?

I'll be watching this thread as I've recently purchased a 72 reissue telecaster deluxe and was wanting to upgrade a lot of the parts since it was so cheap but played amazing. I've found that the pickups are slightly oversized thus making replacement pickups difficult to come by.

You can simply buy a custom pickguard which accomodates a standard sized humbucker from somewhere like Warmoth if you wish to use Seymours, Gibsons or whatever.

The other option is to have Curtis Novak or Jason Lollar make up a new set of Widerange style pickups in either traditional format or as a standard humbucker in a widrange sized case.

Good luck, I love the 72 Deluxe, especially in Walnut color!

Thanks Grum. Went with the Lollars. The Deluxe is in the shop getting them installed. Man, I can''t wait to hear it after.

I've heard some clips off youtube comparing the RI Widerange pickups and the Lollars, there is a huge difference. I'm feeling a little envious.....

Well they weren't cheap, but those youtubes sold me. At least I didn't have to spend $50 on a new pickguard. I'll report back when I get some play time.
