I have what I believe is a 1975 Tele Custom.I've owned it for about 10 years. The guy I bought it from put a beautiful birdseye maple neck on it with jumbo frets. The top was painted gold and the sides and back are natural. Now, as far as I know, that model only came with a natural finish or a black finish. Also, through the finish, you could see behind the bridge plate that a section of the body was cut out and replaced with another type of wood(I know, it sounds painful).I've just sanded the gold paint off and my suspicions were confirmed. Although I'd like to go back to a natural finish(the wood is beautiful), it just won't work with this plug of a different type of wood peeking out from behind the bridgeplate. Can anyone out there shed some light on why someone would do this to a poor little Tele ? I do have pictures of the damage.
