Hi!

I just got this Telecaster, and i'm having doubts that its not legit. here are some photos i took.

As you can see, the tuners are not lined up nicely neither is the neck joint. And for the fender logo and serial number, I'm not quite sure...they are quite bold, especially on the back of the neck.

I took the neck off and there was nothing written on the neck pocket or the neck itself.

If i need to look at other details please tell me. I can upload more pictures if i need to. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

that looks a little suspicious. Good rule is if you have any doubts then it may be fake

It all looks wrong to me too. Even the string tree is wrong. I wasn't aware that Teles had a contour body aside from custom shop and the American deluxe. (they are flat backs)

Does it have micro-tilt adjustment?

The photo of the back of the headstock seems very wrong.

The s/n looks wrong and I don't recall any Tele's with the contoured body mentioned on the headstock. Where did you buy it and what kind of Tele is it supposed to be?

I'm not sure what you are referring to. Here is a picture of the neck plate.

Thank you both for your replies.

I bought it at a used instruments shop. The guy who sold it to me said it was an American Standard from 2000-2001

Even the neck plate looks like a poor fit.

In 2000-2001, American standards had micro-tilt neck adjusment and the non-gloss fast neck was still in use.

You could take it back for a refund or exchange. The out of line tuning keys and off-set neck would be reason enough.

The picture of the off-set neck shows a 21 fret neck, the American standard has 22 (even in 2000).

The decal on the front of the headstock looks like it's from a thinline or special (telecaster is too large and bold).

I'm very sorry that you have been ripped off by this guitar. It is a very obvious fake and no reputable store would have sold this to you. If they won't give you your money back I would take this one to the local police as they likely have a lot of forged, fake or otherwise unknown instruments.

At any rate, just so you'll know what to look for in the future here are all the issues visible from the photos you have posted - particularly if this is supposed to be a 2000-2001 American SeriesTele - by the way these were not called "American Standards" from July 2000 through the end of 2007; they were called either "American Series" or sometimes just "American Tele" or "American Strat".

You mentioned this - the decal is wrong. The "Fender" logo is too thick, and the "Telecaster" part is also too large and too bold and actually should have quote marks ( " " ) around it. Also the "Made in USA" should be on the front of the headstock under the "Fender" logo - it's been that way since they went back to the vintage logo in 1995. The shape appears to be off to begin with. The string trees are wrong; they should be roller trees not this style. Finally the truss rod adjuster area should be a walnut wood plug with a fairly small opening for the allen wrench and this one has what appears to be a large opening with a black plastic plug.

On this one you already mentioned that the tuners don't line up. You also mentioned you weren't sure about the font of the serial number - you are absolutely correct that USA Fender decals don't look anything like that. As already mentioned the "Made in USA" should be on the front of the headstock. The "Custom Contour Body" decal has never been found on a Tele (even the Tele Plus version 2, American Deluxe, or the Tele Deluxes of the 1970s an their reissues); it was only used on Strats.

As others have mentioned an American Series should have a 22-fret neck; this has a 21-fret neck.

The neck plate has something that resembles the proper lettering, but it should also have a small hole in-between (and slightly above) the two lower bolts for the micro-tilt feature.

Thank you John for that detailed description. I'll know better next time. I should have tried a new one before buying this used one... I kinda feel stupid. I'll try to return it first thing in the morning.

I'd like to add that although the 21 fret neck and the guitar and pickguard color are correct for an American 52' reissue, there's also obvious tell-tales that it is not a 52' reissue.

The decals are also incorrect for the 52'.
The truss rod adjustment is made at the other end of the neck on a 52' (photo 1).
The tuners are wrong, it would have vintage style tuners (photo 1 & 2).
The string tree would just be a screw and washer on a 52' (photo 1).
The neck plate would not say anything on it (photo 4).
The lipstick pick up at the neck would have no adjusting screws (photo 3).
The pick guard would be a 5 screw single ply, as apposed to 3-ply 8 screws (photo 3).
Neither of the 2 screws shown in photo 3 would be there on a 52' reissue.

Let us know how it turns out with the music shop. I'd bet they didn't know either.

I'll hope for the best.

So sorry you got taken. Hopefully you get you money back. The signs on that one are pretty obvious if you know what you are looking for.

Assuming you're not completely soured on the idea of trying again. I'd recommend you takes pics of any guitar you may be interested in and post them at TDPRI.com if you are the least bit concerned about anything.

The membership over there is by far the most knowledgeable and responsive I've ever come across and will help you in almost any way you could need.

Best of luck to you.
