i have a 1982, 52 reisse fullerton made telecaster. its serial number is 0579 and the neck is stamped 9-7-82. its a spanking guitar that is in awesome condition. i also have a 1958 vibrolux, but has a replaced speaker (59'), retweed, grill cloth replace, and a few filter caps three i think. anyway someone offered me a 1981, 58/59 reissue gibson es 335 and 400. I've always wanted an es 335 and thats one of the best of a true reissue. Anyway do you think this is a fair trade, my vibrolux and tele for 400 and a gibson es 335 58/59 reissue. let me know your thoughts before i feel the guilt and let em both go. i don't really play the tele though cause i have an 83, 62 reissue strat, so let me know.

also another guy offered me his used steve miller martin for the tele, but he wants cash also.

thanks guys

As you know, the older and well made a Gibson is, even one from their Norlin era, the value shall steadily increase. It would actually be a reasonably safe investment.

As to the Martin, just because it is a Steve Miller Model, it not only doesn't justify the exorbitant price from Martin to begin with but I doubt very strongly that in time it will be a highly sought after collectible where you'll even come near to recouping on this one.

The subject Tele is plentiful and will never be a scarce, 'highly' collectible instrument, per se. Even if 'down the road' your were pining for it, you could get a replacement without too much trouble. As you've said yourself too, you have another "go to" Fender and don't even play it. Keep in mind though that it is what it is and it does have a certain collector's value to it, regardless.

Your particular Vibrolux's collectability is way down with all the modifications. Here too, it is what it is where there is still a certain collector's value to it. Notwithstanding, there are so many modern amps nowadays which can mimic it, replacing it with something tonally similar wouldn't be too hard.

In summary:

I'd pull the trigger on the 335 deal without the additional $400 as I simply feel it is unnecessary on your part. You can harp on the fact that the 335 is a Norlin, surely not an uppermost specimen in Gibson's manufacturing history.

I would surely not do the deal with the Martin per the aforementioned, especially since there is a money lay out on your part.

As always, this is merely IMO where YMMV.
