i recently purchased a fender american vintage 62' tele on ebay. my tech was immediately suspicious that this was a fake for several reasons:
1) the logo decal on the headstock was applied over the lacquer and could be easily peeled off. my understanding is that the logo has been applied under the lacquer since 1968.
2) the only marking on the neck and neck socket was a parts number. no fender logo, no date guitar made. the parts (# 005 6068 970)
3)# in body control cavity didn't appear to be a typical fender type# (# 'C00315585'.)

**i contacted fender with the serial number for the guitar. the appearance of the guitar matches the guitar built with this serial number but the tech and i still have concerns. the wiring was not typical of fender. what do i do next? thanks. i provided fender with these parts numbers this am and will be sending them photos.

The decal on a '62 RI should be on top of the finish, just like they were made in '62. The '52 RIs are like that too.

What's wrong with the wiring? Does it look poorly soldered and messy? That might be cause for alarm but if the switch in the forward position gives you a bassy tone and the tone control doesn't work, that's how them made them in '62.

Pictures would be very helpful. Headstock (front and back), bridge, and a full-body shot would be ideal.

Hi srvdmc2163,

When I bought my US re-issue Strat back in '88 I had exactly the same concerns as you regarding the decal but, as George has pointed out, it should be on top of the lacquer. (Of course, that makes it easier to fake!!!)

With regard to the absence of neck/body markings or dates, I have owned a number of US made vintage re-issues over the past 25 years and, in my experience, the one thing Fender is consistent with is its lack of consistency with these markings! I would not worry too much.

Some photos would be helpful in determining the authenticity of your Tele, and hopefully put your mind at rest.
