Ok so I had this old ('99) MIM Standard Strat that I've modded out. It had a C-shaped neck profile which I had grown to dislike since I started playing '50's style Strats (3 of my 4 Strats have V-shaped necks). So for Christmas, I ordered a custom made neck from Warmoth to replace the old C-shaped neck on my old Strat. Once I got the new neck, I decided to re-carve the old one and see if I could make it more of a V-shape. So I've got this extra Fender neck that I would like to use.......

I've always liked the idea of putting a Strat neck on a Tele, ala Clapton with Blind Faith at Hyde Park in '69 with the maple Strat neck on a sunburst Tele Custom with white binding. I've played around with various options from Warmoth. My dream Tele would essentially be a '62 Custom in sunburst with a neck humbucker and a V-shaped maple Strat neck. I like the idea of having a neck humbucker because I play alot of slide and I prefer a warmer, fatter tone for slide work.

Most of the options I checked out at the Warmoth custom body builder site were pretty expensive. I think the bodies themselves were in the $500 to $700 range, depending on the various features, so after adding the hardware and pickups and such, I'm probably looking at no less than $1000 if I go that route. I've also considered buying a relatively cheap Fender, maybe a Squier, and modding it. I could go with a Classic Vibe Tele Custom.

If anybody has any ideas or suggestions, I'm all ears. I'd really like to have a Tele in one of three styles......the classic "50's blackguard blonde", the early '60's Tele Custom with binding, or the '72 Tele Custom style. I'm looking for the most cost effective option. Thanks.

You will have to modify the tele body a bit to get it to take a strat neck. The neck pocket for a tele is cut flat on the front edge, where the strat is rounded a little. This is the edge nearest the end of the fretboard. ;) A quick zip with a dremel tool will have it fitting in no time though.

You don't have to do anything to a Tele body to put a Strat neck on it - the only thing that really touches the neck is the pickguard.

The neck is routed so that the fretboard actually overhangs the pickguard. I put this Strat neck on the Tele shown without doing anything to body or neck.

If you want to put a Tele neck on a Strat, you will have to carve or sand the pickguard a little, but that's all.

Cool......thanks for the replies. I noticed on the Warmoth custom body builder, you could order either a Tele or Strat neck socket on the body.

I'm kind of thinking that my most cost effective option might be buying a cheap guitar (MIM standard or Squier CV or VM or something) and modding it out.

Warmouth bodies are nice, but pretty spendy. You could probably buy a whole Squier guitar for about the same price. Much less expensive (and still pretty nice) bodies can be found at Guitar Fetish.

Check out MJT Aged finishes on ebay. You can find a custom Style body for a way better price the Warmoth and it will be Nitro!

An example below, although this one is a complete kit. Keep an eye on them for just a double bound body or call Matt and Mark directly.
