I love the way a Telecaster looks with the bridge/pickup cover 'ashtray' on, but I've never figured out how you could play with the damn thing on - anyone here regularly play a Tele with its 'ashtray' on? How do you do it?

Personally, just my opinion, I don't like the ashtrays. But not sure how it would affect playability. How does it change it?

I just rest the side of my palm on the cover. No problems thus far.

When mine are hanging on the wall, the ash tray is fine, but for playing, it's a real pain in the butt - no good for serious palm muting and who plays everything open all the time? Muting with the tray on puts you way out in front of the bridge and tends to mess control up quite a bit.

Put your ash tray on for taking pictures.

Currently, mine stays in open G, so that's not a problem. Not much palm muting for my slide playing either. My Tele Deluxe is in standard tuning. I can play it either way; it just looks better in my opinion with the cover on.

i bought a tele with a bridge cover on it that was made custom by a dealer and its something that takes a lot of getting used to, and it really does depend on your style, i use my tele for jazz and blues mostly, so i do as the other person said, i rest it on the cover, so if you do it, id recommend, you slow down your playing when you use it just to get yourself accustomed to it, hope this really helps

Watched a clip on YouTube from The Beatles' movie "Let it Be" of George Harrison playing his rosewood Tele with the ashtray cover on. Didn't seem to bother him any.

Possibly overdubbed?

I like the looks, but keep my covers off all the time. In the case, the pressure of the lid will leave scuff marks around the bridge if left on . Not a big thing to most of us but I'm annal about things like that.

Thanks for the info - yeah, I'm one of those guys that lots of times has my palm on the strings at the bridge to mute them - don't know how I got in that habit, but when I use the cover and I can't do that, I feel pretty lost. Like somebody said, when the Tele's on the wall or in a picture - I always slap the cover on!!

Ashtray cover on your Tele????

What is this... like 1963 or something? lol

No but seriously..... I do a lot a palm muting so I don't think I could play well with one on.

But I've never tried. The one that came with my '52 AVRI is still in the clear plastic bag.

I'll have to try it sometime just for the lulz

I play with my cover on all the time, i only take it off for cleaning the bridge and changing strings. it gives me an elevation over the strings and helps steady my hand when im playing some things
