I just bought a new MIM Standard Tele w/ an Alder body. Tell me how you feel about Alder vs. Ash.

My MIM Standard Strat is alder.

My AVRI 57 Tele is ash.

They are both good woods. Makes no difference to me what so ever.

Really. This is one of those topics where a search should be made mandatory before any new threads are allowed.

Some species of ash are quite heavy and consequently are believed to have a darker tone and more sustain but the jury is still out on that one.I had an Ash bodied 79/79 Strat and it sustained like a Steinway Concert Grand but who's to say that's not a combination of other dynamics? To my eye ash has a much more pronounced and even grain especially when finished with a grain enhancing stain.

Alder-on is a tone wood from a planet that no longer exists because of the death star.
Ash is a used crematorium wood.
Rosewood by any other name would smell as sweet.
Maple rhymes with staple and smells of pancakes.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I am starting to like the ash a little more even though they are much heavier.

When someone can identify the wood of a guitar by sound only then the wood will mean something. Until then, it is only about what looks good to you, what feels good to you, and which you prefer to work with (if you are a luthier).

Enjoy them all.
