Hello folks I want to share an experience I had last night. I was invited to see my friends sons band play. I think I was one of the oldest people there. There were a few parents. The music was young energy punk. I noticed the kids were playing low end instruments . . perhaps not low end . . but cheaper line of instruments. I noticed Fender Squires and Gibson Ephiphones.

The reason I am bring this up. Is because I just got into playing guiter (later in life) . . . And I have done gobs of research on good guitars....and what guitars can be great for playing live and what not. I was told you can play a Mexican Telecaster live and I have seen people perform live with them too!

However....when I saw these young kids with the "Squires" & "Epiphones" . . . . The spirit of how they played the intruments really made an impression on me. These kids played from the heart. It did not matter what name brand or how low end the equipment was.....but the energy behind it.

Being new to guitar, I have to admit that I can't really tell what a quality sound is or how to differentiate between Mexican or American made instruments.

Speaking for myself . . . . and all the research I have done on my guitar . . . perhaps I need to worry about how good I play my instrument.

Just like these kids I saw last night. They played from the heart. Just like I should.

There will always be those who believe that to sound great you need to throw a ton of money into your gear and there are those that always believe that a cheaper guitar is just as great when they find a jewel.

I think you summed it up best though, it`s about how you play and the emotion behind the music.

I have Mexican Fenders and some Epiphone guitars and I find them to be of similar (high) quality. Similarly priced models compare well to one another. I've never seen a decal on a guitars headstock contribute to the tone.

Very nicely put. I have some lower level guitars that I really dig a lot. And I think there's something to be said for those lower level guitars that are built well and perform just fine. To me, that's "thank you very much".

We're writing a new album right now, and when we go to record I'm going to document the guitars I use for the songs. I'm planning on doing the recordings using a few lower levels for almost all of it.

Here are a couple that have been used already in our first four songs:

Ibanez- RG200-b
J. Reynolds/ Hamer Slammer (pieced together)- Strat

For the upcoming songs;
Squier Esprit
Hamer Slammer- Strat
Hamer Slammer/ Photo Genic (pieced together Tele)
Washburn Maverick Bt-2
Squier CV 60's

I like this video of one of our live performances. If you look closely, I'm playing my Squier Esprit, and Ryan (in the middle) is playing an Epiphone Special II (plywood body).. Does anyone in the crowd notice?

I understand where you're coming from Reno, I have two guitars hooked up downstairs. My CS Gilmour Strat, and a 96-97 MIM standard Tele. I'm not going to lie, and say there is no difference in feel or sound. But I tell you what, I enjoy messing with the Tele just as much as the Strat. I just wish I could play one of them

I have 3 MIM Fenders and 6 Epiphones and I wouldn`t think twice about gigging with any of them. They are all well made and great sounding and playing guitars and are far better than many other guitars in their price ranges. Most of the sound comes from your hands anyway,Skunk Baxter has done some of Steely Dan`s best guitar work on old Kents and Silvertones when he could have just as easily taken out one of his vintage Gibsons or Fenders.
