Well not really...

Without getting to far into Fender lore or technicalities...first of all they all have the same body shape.

An Esquire predates them all and only has a bridge pickup but a different wiring scheme.

A Broadcaster was the name of the the Esquire once a neck pickup was added, however Fender was sued over the name Broadcaster and then they were sold with no name and nicknamed the Nocaster, which once a new was found, was then marketed under the name Telecaster.

That is about it in a nutshell.

Just to clarify ....

Yes, the Esquire was originally introduced with a single (bridge) pickup and no truss rod. Fender also built a couple of 2-pickup Esquires without trussrods. Leo was eventually convinced that a truss rod was needed, pulled the Esquire off the market and introduced a 2-pickup guitar called the Broadcaster. Fender was NOT sued by Gretsch over the Broadcaster name. Gretsch sent Fender a telegram asking them nicely to stop using that name. Fender quickly agreed and the Nocaster was born. Can you imagine that happening today? The Telecaster was introduced in 1951 with 1952 being the first full year of production. The Esquire was also reintroduced with a truss rod. As a side note, Esquire magazine threatened to sue Fender over their use of that name. Fender blew them off and Esquire never followed through.

For the best history of the early Blackguard Fenders, pick up a copy of "The Blackguard Book":

While Gretsch never did sue Fender, that telegram they sent was essentially a "cease and desist" letter - if Fender hadn't changed the name Gretsch may well have gone ahead and sued them. I agree with you that it would never happen today without getting lawyers involved on both sides first; sounds like Leo and the Gretsch family more or less worked it out themselves.

Flash forward to 1985 - Leo's first Tele-shaped G&L guitar was released as the Broadcaster; Gretsch did the same thing (after G&L built about 825 or so Broadcasters) and Leo renamed that guitar the ASAT.
