I have a rosewood fretboard on the neck im putting on my Tele. However it has Pearl dot inlays on it. I wanted pearl diamond inlays on mine. So my question is can I just order the diamond inlays and put them on over the dot inlays or is something else required? Im comletley clueless when it comes to inlays and how to apply or remove them so deatailed instruction would be well aprecitated.

Thanks for your help,
Sam C

Hey Sam,

Although I've never done something like that, I just ran across this on frets.com. It's a blog about a Martin restoration, but if you look at "Day 18: Refretting" it shows how he replaces an inlay on a rosewood fretboard.

HTH :D

You said yourself that you are "completely clueless". Did you really expect this to be an easy job? I suggest you just leave well enough alone or take it to a professional who has the proper tools and skills to do this job. That is not a job for amatuers with a hack saw and hammer.

Guarantee it won't be cheap. Since the size and shape of the two inlays are very different, you would either have to use larger diamond inlays and enlarge the cutout in the fretboard, or fill the space in the fretboard around the smaller diamond inlay. Either way will require some intricate work. This is a perfect example of time = money.

Maybe you should try some of the stick-ons that have been referenced a number of times here in the Forum. I haven't tried them, but several have, with good results. And you're not limited to diamonds, you can have anything from keystones to dragons. Go for it!

If you are truly obsessed with the idea, it'd probably be a lot cheaper just to find a replacement neck with what you want already inlaid, or go custom.

Stick ons? Now thats the kind of answer i was looking for! Somthing niccceeee and simple. Didnt really know if such a thing actually exsisted. and yes it most likely would be esier just to replace the neck with one with the inlays and fretboard i wanted but i just dont have the cash.

Do you really want stick on position markers on your guitar?

Really now. Anything large enough to cover a dot marker is going to be huge. Not to mention the first time you do a finger vibrato on the G or D string at that fret and it scrapes the heck out of the stick on. :x

Tacky, tacky, tacky.

Save up your money and do it properly.

Yeah, they're tacky - they go on and don't come off until you want them to. Here's a link to one of the best examples:

Do what you want and the heck with the detractors~!

Wow! Are those cheesy or what? That ranks right up there with the fake fender louvers people put on their cars.

Yeah. To heck with me. I'm just expressing my opinion which I believe I am free to do in this forum.

Haha Tacky or not if they do the job and at least look real they will certainly do the job for now. And who cares how fake they are if you never tell anyone theyre fake  Thanks so much guys. I got just the advice I was looking for even if Mr.BlueSky melted at the face of putting a fake inlay on a guitar  It will do the job just fine! Im sure one day i will have the money to gawk away at fakes but for now what you dont tell em' wont hurt em'
