I really want a Fat Telecaster but I have had a hard time finding one and I can't afford the new '52 hot rod. I was wondering how much routing is involved if I want to drop a mini humbucker in a MIM standard. Any help is appreciated.

That depends on 2 things.

1. How big the mini-humbucker is.
2. How the guitar was routed to begin with.

I've noticed on a lot of newer Strats, (don't know about Tele's as I've just gotten into them) that they are pre-routed for a H-S-H combo, even if they're only installed with the Triple-S.

Assuming a Tele is pre-routed for a Humbucker, you shouldn't have to do any routing at all.
So my suggestion is to pull your pickguard off and see how much room is under it on this MIM guitar.

Thanks Al. I don't actually OWN the guitar yet - I was asking so I would be prepared for what I was getting into before the purchase. If a a different model was routed different I would go with that so I was asking if anyone knew for sure.

I've looked at the bodies at Warmoth and they seem to routed for either a vertical or "slanted" single coil pup at the bridge and a single at the neck, except for the Tele customs and Deluxes, which had HBs in them to begin with. It doesn't look as if the bridge hole looks "square" enough or big enough to fit a standard side by side HB in the hole w/o routing. Maybe a P90 might fit, though I can't be sure w/o measurements. I'm thinking about hot rodding a tele with a stacked HB in the bridge that'll fit the slanted hole, assuming that the body's deep enough. Should be trying this next month, will let you all know how it's working out.
