I'm trying to do a set up on my Tele which is a pre-owned Special Edition Custom FMT HH. I've straightened the neck and set the bridge saddles so that the gap at the 17th fret (capoed at the first fret) is set at .020 in. After removing the capo I found that the strings are buzzing when fingering them at the first fret and they are lower than .020. I'm assuming that the depth of the cuts on the NUT are too deep. My question is: Is .020 the factory setting? If not, what is the factory setting? And, where can I get a new nut if necessary?

Well, first off, never 'straighten' the neck, or any neck. It is bowed for a reason.

This link will show you how to set up a Telecaster. When you are using this guide please remember that a little goes a long way when you are making adjustments. Also remember that the guitar must be in tune at all times and that the adjustments you make will change the state of tune so you have to check and recheck and recheck again every time you make an adjustment.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
