Hello all! n00b to this forum.... looks like a great group of people here.
I thought I would share my Japanese Tele with you and open for commentary.
I bought it new from the now deceased Colorado Music in downtown Denver in 1995. Funny story: I wanted to see if the store owner would throw in a hardshell case. He said he didin't have any extra hardshell cases for Teles. He did find a Fender Jaguar case laying all by its lonesome in the corner. We tried to fit the Tele in the case but with no luck. He then got out a hammer and proceeded to pound the crap out of the styrofoam. After about 10 minutes, voila... a sub-par perfect fit! I am probably the only Telecaster owner out there with an OHSC for a Fender Jag! LOL!

A couple of things you all may be able to shed some light on: The stamp on the necksocket says TL-52D/EX. From this stamp, logo, and the button style string guide I surmise it is a '52 reissue. Anyone know what the D stands for? Research on the web brought me to Xhefri's webpage, where there is some information that the EX stands for EXTRAD. There is no EXTRAD stamp on the back of the headstock. Others say it means that the EX stands for export....
Another thing I found is that most Tele '52 reissues have black pickguards. Everything on my guitar is stock, including the white pickguard.
Anyways, I love this guitar, it plays like butter, and I have never seen another one like it. The V-neck is super comfy.
I would love to hear any feedback.
Thanks!

For a long time I was lead to believe that the EX in the neck socket or on the heel of the neck means EXTRAD... now I am not so sure. Most EXTRAD MIJ guitars (EXTRAD is like the Custom Shop of Japan Fender) have a stamp on the back of the headstock. So the EX inside the neck sock or on the neck means one of two things: 1) Export or 2) an EXTRAD part used in conjunction with a standard part, like an EXTRAD body with a non-EXTRAD neck. I am not really sure and have been told both by several reliable people, including one source in Japan. Wish I could be of more help to you! (BTW, I have owned about 5 of these in this color. Several of them had the white pickguard and all had sweet V-shaped necks and semi-transparent vintage white color."

Thanks for the input. This one does have that semi-transparent finish. The pics don't show it, but the wood grain shines through the color finish. Very special guitar!

I have one right now just like yours but with the black pickguard. This is basically New Old Stock. I have it tucked away with the Japanese Case, just as it came from the factory. These ARE the sweetest guitars to play. Low action and all those great Tele tones!

Wow that's a beautiful guitar. Does it have the 52 wireing or modern wireing? Do you get the modern selections with the three was selector switch (Bridge, Bridge+Neck, Neck)?

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the kind words.... I assume you are talking about both mine and Xhefri's  I will check it out when I have some spare time... honestly, I haven't peeked under the hood in the entire 16 years I have had it!
No comments from the peanut gallery, please.

I have a Harmony Strat copy. Its case was made for a BC Rich Warlock. I bought the Warlock with the case, and turned around and sold the Warlock and kept the case. I did some cutting of the styrofoam and now my Strat fits perfectly in the case.

Here are some pics of the neck and neck pocket of my '80s Japanese Tele: It has the EX but no Extrad marking on the back of the headstock. I was told it was made of sen wood. It's a typical '52 style Tele with a see through butterscotch blonde finish and a black pickguard. Hard V neck and stock except for the 6 saddle bridge and the modified wiring.

Very cool. Sen BTW is Asian Ash. It has a fine grain to it and makes excellent bodies. I am sure EX in this situation is EXPORT. I really need to update that section of my website. An EXTRAD will say so right on the headstock. They were a marketing step lower than custom shop but were as well build. The EXTRAD used nitro finishes and had more hands on detailing. Nice guitar! Looks like the bridge was changed to the 6-saddle type. I just sold my last 52 a week ago. Have a 67 and a JD Tele right now, plus a few MIJ DX Teles configured like a Strat. Thanks for sharing!

Hello I have one of those that I bought from a guy who bought it second hand from an Internet dealer who said it was Extrad... Mine as a TL-52Dex Stamped blonde body and a TLC-62BEX neck with rosewood, both parts are from 1998... This written my opinion is that I feel that there ain't many Ex stamped necks or bodies and therefore tend to somewhat disagree with the " it stands for Export" explanation as I feel that we should see more of those then if that truly was the meaning. Does this mean that it is "extrad Japan custom shop" ? mine doesn't have the extrad logo on the back... but bears the EX on each part??? Was it build custom made by someone else because the neck is stamped 62 and the body 52? I do not know since both part have 98 and that most of those "EX stamped" guitars seem to have differing neck and body "model number". It say Crafted in japan on the neck.
