Was in the market for a telecaster...preferably a 2001-2004 American Series Tele. I was parusing Craigslist, and came across a cherry sunburst american deluxe tele. It is said to be IMMACULATE. I capitalize that word because the seller on craigslist capitalized it as well...LOL. Anyway...I was hoping for a tele with a rosewood fretboard...I just love rosewood, but this tele has a maple fretboard. He is asking $900, of course, I'd negotiate for less.
1. Is this a decent deal? It seems to be...I've priced out deluxe strats/teles before and this seems pretty good.
2. Is there anything in particular about the deluxe tele's from that year that I should be aware of? (Neck shape, etc)

Thanks for the help! I can probably tell you everything there is to know about Strats for the past 10 years, but I've never bought a Tele, let alone an American Deluxe.

Well, for one, Telecasters look way more like real Telecasters with a maple FB.

The ADx is a great, top of the line instrument. Given that they're Around $1500-$1700 new, I'd say $900 is a good price.

2007 will likely have the Samarian Cobalt noiseless pickups. People have all sorts of opinions about noiseless pickups so I can't really tell you anything useful. SCN's are supposed to be pretty good as far as noiseless are concerned.

I used to have an ADx Jazz Bass and it was absolutely like playing rich creamery butter. It was a fine instrument. Frankly, I don't think you can go wrong with an AmDx. Plus, if you pick it up for a decent price on the used market, if you end up not liking it, you can probably turn it over for about the same as what you paid for it.

Mate I faced this same situation about a month or more ago!

My advice is that if you want the real deal Tele experience, save some more money and go for the Fender 60th Anniversary Limited Edition Blackguard Blonde Tele. Brand new I purchased mine for $1420 aud.

One Awesome Tele :) I am glad I didn't buy the Deluxe.

I find that the http://used.guitarcenter.com is useful for gauging the current market value on instruments. (I don't work for GC). Just do a search for 'fender amer' and sort by price. (I'm not sure what what would limit it to Am Deluxe, and GC stores usually enter them differently anyways from one to the other). You can also use Ebay to see what people are buying them for, (again averaging what you see). I'm kinda guessing that $900 is probably a little more than market value, (as CL tends to be). I would negotiate.

Good luck!

UPDATE.....

I spoke to the seller, and he is willing to take $800. The serial # is legit...it starts with DZ7, which is the norm for a deluxe instrument from Fender. It is in MINT condition, and comes with the original hardshell case. It looks like the real deal...bound body, tummy contour, the logo looks right, etc. He is gonna send me some more pictures tomorrow. If I like it, I'm gonna send someone up to meet him to buy it. I am out of state, and won't be able to play it until the end of December, but I can wait. Think I should go for it? I've never bought a deluxe Fender before, and don't know enough about that particular year tele.

One thing I notice from the pics...the tuning machines are not locking tuners like most Deluxe's I've seen. Is this normal for a AM Dlx tele?

The `07 Deluxe Tele didn`t come with locking tuners, they put them on after `07. I have that same Tele and its awesome. You can always add the locking tuners after you get it though.

To build on your post I'm 95% sure that Fender put the locking tuners on the American Deluxe Tele when the new version came out in 2010.

I think you're 100% right, John C.

I owned a 2009 American Deluxe that had the conventional staggered Ping tuners. A 2010 model I played to test the N3 pickups had locking tuners.
