So I finally got my project done. I have only had about 20 minutes to actually play the guitar after replacing the pickups. I need to lower the bridge and neck pups some, boy howdy are those DiMarzio pups hot!
The Bluesbucker in split coil mode is kind of soft, so I don't think I can lower it too much.
All in all, I'm please with the results, thanks again Martian!

Appreciate the insight in this thread. You guys really know your stuff.

Quick question... I have the MP Tele Plus and was considering changing out only the middle pickup for a Texas Special. What do you guys think?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome, Craig.

Before we go any further, here too, I must ask the same two questions:

1. What DO you like about your current middle pickup?
2. What is it missing?

Thanks for the help. Appreciate you responding.

The middle pickup is just a bit bland. The humbucker and Tele pickups are great, lots of character; I was just thinking, since I've always loved the heft and body of the Texas Specials, it might be fun to swap it out. But that said, I don't want to mess up this fun little axe.

What I love about this guitar in particular is that it's a bit of a Frankenstein with its PUP configuration. Running with that theme, I thought I could put a little Stevie Ray in the middle to really make it weird.

Reading your previous posts, you obviously know more about how the actual sound and pickups work, so I defer to your expertise as to whether this is a horrendous idea or not.

Thanks!
Craig

Craig,

Thank you for your confidence in me!

Actually, you've thought this out well. A Texas Special would be an excellent candidate for your goal. You might also want to consider a Seymour Duncan SSL-5 or SSL-6. These two Duncans are the same pickup, voiced similar to the TS but with more output and high end. The difference between the the SSL-5 and the SSL-6 is, the SSL-5 has staggered height polepieces whereas the the SSL-6 has even height ones. If it were me, I'd lean towards the SSL-6. FYI: Practicing what I preach, the SSL-6 is what I have in the middle position of my guitar.

I have one of these MP Teles and I replaced the mid and bridge pickups with Seymour Duncans and replaced the coil split toggle with a series/split/parallel toggle. I love this guitar and the very wide ranging tone selection.

The details of the modifications are here:
