Hi there,
I've recently joined the forum...brill it is to.

I've been reading many posts.
There seems to be a lot of people who buy a Mex Tele and then say they replaced this and replaced that. [ie different pick ups, switch, volume & tone, upgrade wiring etc.etc.]

I've got a Mex Standard Tele. I bought it last year.
Man i love it as it is. It sounds fantastic. That great Tele sound.
I've never played an American Tele, although i do have an American Strat.
I'm not in any groups & don't play live. [although i used to be in a group & play live]
I just play my Tele at home, either to backing tapes or on its own.

Are there others like me who don't feel the need or want to change anything on there Mex Tele cos they love it as it is. [As bought]
ARE YOU OUT THERE!

Any MIM tele can benefit from changing out the weak original pick-ups.

If your switch looks like this one, and you are replacing the original pick-ups, you might as well get rid of this cheap switch:

Get a CRL 3 way switch, like this one

While you are in there, you might as well swap out the original pots and replace them with CTS 250k Audio-Taper Pots, and add an SBE 716P Orange Drop 400 Volt .022µF Capacitor while you are at it.

And while you are in there, you might as well swap out the original female input jack for a Switchcraft jack.

If you want to use a guitar cable with an angled input plug instrument cable, get a "Switchcraft L11 Jack," which is a bit longer, and allows for the use of the angled input plug.

You can get all of these items at Antique Electronc Supply and Guitarelectronics.com.

Or just order the whole deal from Acme Guitar Works for $50 and save yourself a lot of soldering.
You'll get a beautiful set-up like this one:

I recommend "Fender Custom Shop Texas Special Tele Pickups",....

...unless you want to go "noiseless."

Granted, these upgrades will cost you around $150 - $180.
But this up-grade will greatly improve any MIM Telecaster and are well worth it.

Finally, get a Fret End Dressing File from Stewart MacDonald and dress the ends of the frets, and your MIM neck will feel as good and play as well as a MIA neck.

I have a Mex Tele which is one of my favorite guitars! The only thing I have done to it is add some shielding to lessen the hum a bit! I love mine no changes!

I also have a Mex tele - a Nashville Power Deluxe - which is currently (and possibly forever) my favourite guitar. It sounds great, the workmanship is superb and the only thing I change is the 9V battery.

my main working guitar is a 94 MIM Tele. I love the guitar but the only time I change something is if i am not happy with it. The lead pickup was good but i wanted more of a vintage twang. I put a set of texas specials in it and have been happy with it ever since. It's a great guitar...just wanted to make it a little better

I wouldn't change anything on my 72 tele deluxe. But I agree with the weak pickups on the standards. For a start, they don't fit the strings-anyone else notice this? The pole piece is completely off on the high E string(at least at the neck, but it still sounds weak on the other positions). This makes it sound so weak. I will change the pickups on my standard strat at some point, although I don't want to spend £££ on pickups that don't even fit the strings(like the standard pickups). Anyone know of any pickups that fit properly, or a way around this problem?

HI CrustyB,the old swap out the pickups of MIM Fenders line is just absolute nonsense. Granted back in the early 90s there was a bit of a problem with quality control but it wasn't as bad as a lot of people made it out to be.Some great guitars came out of Mexico in the 90s,one my nephew bought new in 94 and he gigged with 'til he retired it last year, was an exceptional guitar and people often asked him if his pups were Lace sensors or custom pups of some kind-she sounded that great. The notion that MIM pups are inferior is also balderdash, the pickups may not have the same values as those of a MIA but that doesn't make them poor or inferior pickups.Anyone who automatically suggests a pickup swap is just adhering to what's basically an old wives tale and surely isn't knowledgeable about MIM Teles.I've tried mine against my buddy's MIA Tele and it has just as much spank and twang as the MIA but not quite as high an output, but that's what volume controls are for ,isn't it?

I have a MIM BSB FSR and it's a great value. The only things I'm thinking about changing is the switch to a 4-way and the jack to one of L-11 Switchcraft. I'm in hurry to make these changes just yet but maybe down the road?

I think all of us would benefit most by practicing a little more than worrying about what's MIA or MIM. I sure this will ruffle some feathers but I have several MIA and MIM Tele's and Strat's. The finish of the bodies on the MIM are better overall than the MIA ones, and as far as sound goes...I need to get a lot better before I become expert enough to discuss the difference in sound quality of any of them.

I just got done replacing the stock bridge with a vintage reissue. Love it!!! The sound is brighter and it has that "twang" sound.
