I purchased a set of Fender Custom Shop 51 Nocaster pickups for a tele build I am working on. (My first complete build up) The pickup instructions call for a 150K resistor & a .05uf cap. I cannot find these anywhere. I understand about treble bleed. Is there an alternative to these as I want to get the tone the pickuos are designed to give?

Welcome.

150K resistors and .047uf caps are readily available at any Radio Shack. The .003uf difference between a .05uf cap and a .047uf cap is indistinguishable to the naked ear.

I dig!

An electrician at work gave similar advice, some even suggested trial & error. I guess my biggest concern has been damage to the pickups. But after looking at other Fender schematics most pickups don't even have resistors.

You would only require the resistor if you wanted to create the original Broadcaster/ Nocaster "Blend" control, as per this Seymour Duncan diagram.

If you just want to do the modern wiring...which gives bridge/ bridge & neck/ neck, then you don't need the resistor, just the cap. And follow the modern Tele wiring diagrams for that. Possibly the diagrams you've got!

Such things cannot damage the pickups. In a nutshell, all resistors and capacitors do is change the tonality of the pickup(s).

I also recommend modern wiring. Here's the diagram:

With 250K pots, use a .047uf cap only if you want a darker sound. Otherwise, you are better off using a .022uf cap and using the tone control to roll off any unwanted brightness.

While you can use any number of brands of capacitors, I recommend these:
SBE 716P High Performance Orange Drop Capacitors - 400 Volts

Don't get ripped off, get these at Antique Electronic supply:

I think that resistor should be a 15K, not 150K
