Hi

I`ve had my baja telecaster guitar for nearly a week now and I love it but I was toying with the idea of changing the strings from 10 gauge as supplied down to 009 as my other guitars are 009 so Im used to that gauge. Do you think this is a good idea or will it effect the sound ...maybe weaken it? and would it need truss rod adjustment?

any advice appreciated

That's such a PERSONAL thing for both FEEL and TONE purposes. My Fender came stock with 9's and for TONE purposes I've got both of my guitars set up with 11's.

I'm pretty sure after awhile I could get used to the feel of just about any gauge, but I just prefer the sound and tone of the heavier strings.

So to answer at least some of your question I would say YES it will effect your tone and over all sound, but that's not always bad. It's just personal.

The ony way for YOU to know is to try it and find out. I went from 9s to 10s on all of my guitars. You might need to do a new setup. Again, the only way to know is to do it. Let us know how you like it.

i run 9s on all my guitars, the first thing i did when i got my baja was change the strings down to 9s, didnt notice much of a differece in tone, remained fairly consistent, i know this as i did a recording with it first with the thicker strings and then with the thinner...

as for my neck, it had a bit of up bow when i got it, i adjusted it but after half a turn it was compleatly loose, there is another topic about that problem that ive posted in...

It's a choice on the strings you run. The 9s are too loose for me. I'm currently using 11s on my Tele and it did give a little more punch. It did tone down the twang a bit but it works for me. I think Teles should come stock with 10s, ymmv.

It's a very personal thing.

For me, I prefer 10's as they are a nice compromise between ease of play, staying in tune, and a nice tone. I am too heavy handed for strings of a lighter gauge.

You don't need heavy gauge strings to get massive tone. Billy Gibbons plays with 8's and 7's. His new signature Dunlop strings are 7's. To my ears, he has a pretty massive tone.

The man who is probaby the best country picker in Eastern Canada and good friend of Scotty Moore,Lew Skinner, swears by D'Addario 8-38s on all of his Teles.Although he uses 10s on all other electrics he says that the 8s are the best thing on Teles for Merle Travis style "chicken pickin' " and doing steel guitar like bends. If that's good enough for Lew,it's certainly good enough for me.

I have 11s on my MIM Tele for open G tuning. I have 9s on my '73 Tele Deluxe.

12-53's for acoustics, 10-46's for de-tuned electric guitars (metal/rock), 9-42's for concert pitch on fixed bridge electric guitars, 9-46's on floating bridge electric guitars, I'm ah gonna experiment with 7's and 8's soon. I remember fiddling with 8's when I was a kid. I snapped too many 8's. I tried a set of 9.5-42's and 9-44's and they felt weird. I played 11's at concert pitch and tore calluses off of my finger tips. ...I haven't tried bridge cables, yet.
