I'm not a chemist but I use regular fender guitar polish on my 62RI strat with nitro finish. It hasn't had any bad effects. I have also used spray on car wax which shines it up real good.

Yes. and if you wanna buff it to make it glossy, use some 3M scratch remover and a cotton cloth ;)

I've used a variety of scratch and swirl removers, automotive cleaning and high-shine waxes, cotton cloths and wax sponges and none of them have damaged the finish. My HWY 1 shines like a baby's fanny! I know some will cringe at this but in my experience, it's all worked with no problems... that being said, there'll always be a bit of the orange peel look to the finish w/o the use of an actually buffer but the finish is already so thin, I'd recommend you not go there. I think that's where problems are most likely to arise. Have fun Daniel-san...

As well as my Telecaster, i have a Highway 1 Strat.
I asked in a guitar shop for some advice on getting light scratches from the body. The chap in the shop told me to use T Cut what you use on car body work,
I tried it and it worked just brill.
I wouldn't want to do it to often though!!

I didn't read all of the postings, but I polished my black Hwy1 with rubbing compound and it shined up just like an old Strat from the 50s. It looks great.

I use carnuba paste wax and it's buffed up beautifully. regular guitar polish will be fine too but it won't actually protect the finish the way a proper wax job will.

Speaking of carnuba paste wax, Collinite is the best for both your car and your guitar:

Btw,I should have been more specific,I am not looking to get a gloss on the guitar, only to retain and protect the satin-nitro finish. If anyone would like to elaborate...

THNX~

I may be wrong, but I think as soon as you apply wax, it's going to become more shiny than the original matte finish... and I'd agree that regular guitar polish isn't going to offer much in the way of finish protection. I'd skip the scratch removers and cleaning type waxes and just go for a nice coat of reg wax. It'll shine up a bit but not so much, and you'll have an actual coat of something to protect the finish better....they are pretty thin!

I was recently told that Gibson pump polish will keep the matte finish as
well as protect the guitar.

Thnx for ur comment~
